i have, replaced almost all of them. got them at my local true value. SS Button head allens, most of them. i would just pull a few and take them down there and match 'em up. | ||

Ronmold I had to clean up the threads in one of the holes for the air box cover on the bike I just bought and it was a 1/4-20 thread. Doc I think they are talking about the four screws holding the air box cover on. The same screw is used in several places. (Message edited by cadhopper on March 14, 2009) | ||

Hi Doc, their stock black cap head body plastic fasteners I think he meant the fasteners that attach the plastic panels to the bike. So it would be bolts that are black and made out of steel. I think they are stainless on my 08. | ||

1/4-20 is correct. The problem matching them is the shoulder. | ||

Panhead_dan is right, finding a pan head shoulder bolt might be a tall order. You should be able to order the screws from a different model Buell from the dealer and get them in stainless. All the screws on my XB9 and the XB12SS I owned are/were stainless. (Message edited by cadhopper on March 14, 2009) | ||

The black ones corrode, get scratched up and look like crap. OK, it's just that I've never really had a problem with them. I have a couple handlebar control allen caps in black that started to get a little rusty in the allen socket area -- I just take a Q-tip, dip it in the matching paint (usually satin) and dab it. Cleans it up quite a bit. Might work for the Torx fasteners if they aren't buggered up too bad. | ||

If your using stainless to hold body panels or anything non stressed you should be ok. Don't use stainless on swingarms or any other stressed member. Stainless is soft and will stretch, work harden and eventually break. A plated grade 5 or better bolt/screw should be used there. | ||

Call me cheap and old fashioned . . . I ordered a package of spares as well as spare nylon washer and just keep extras in a tray of extra Ulysses parts. They are cheaper than a sandwich and that way whenever I pull one out or see one that is looking poorly I just replace it. It would be cool if someone could find high quality, high grade (say aircraft grade) fasteners and post the sizes and source. I'm always scared of hardware store fasteners.  | ||

Another trick on the rusty hand-control (or any, really) hex head bolts: keep a jar of clear nail polish in the garage. Torque down whatever fastener, and immediately give it a coat of nail polish. Works great on chrome and keeps it from getting finish-cracks. |
