Hi all,
I'm considering selling my nicely modded 2006 Uly to fund another Ducati purchase. Yeah, I know....

I've posted a couple pictures in the "Bikes For Sale" section of this forum. Could someone please give me an idea what the bike would be worth? I'd appreciate it, and I'd prefer to sell it to another Buell forum guy.

Thanks in advance,
Ray

Well, as the owner of a "white frame black wheels half-faired prettiest bike ever made" 1992 Ducati 900SS I can't speak against your choice...

...one data point: after my deer strike (totaled '06 Uly) I bought an '06 Uly replacement (9,900 miles) for $6923.

I think most used '06s are hovering around the $7K mark.

Mods often don't contribute that much to resale value. DAMHIK.

Mods tend to take away from resale value, nobody wants a bike that was hacked to bits. Some showbikes are exceptions, but they usually have 5x the bikes value in parts, work, and paint.

There was one at the Daytona (actually Deland) auction this year, but the bidding results aren't on the web yet.

Milar,

Can you tell me why you've decided to go back to the Uly? I also picked the Uly over a Multi, but the Duc was #2 on my short list. I sometimes wonder what the trade-offs would be had I bought the Multi.

I'm going back for a couple of reasons.

1. My Uly was dead nuts reliable, got great gas mileage and was inexpensive to maintain. The Duc is fiddly, gets mediocre gas mileage and is expensive to maintain.

2. Equal fun factor.

3. I'm touring more and prefer the Uly. More dealers, better mileage, better seat, no chain and larger bags.

That is interesting... I owned a 2005 Ducati Multistrada 1000S and I sold it in order to buy the Ulysses. I like the Ulysses for all the same reasons as Milar: no chain, no valve adjustments, readily available service everywhere, reliability. I've been lured to the Duc 1100S by tales that it is much better than the 1000S in terms of power and torque, rideability, comfort. It would be interesting to test ride one back to back with my Uly, especially considering that I've gotten my Uly to run extremely well and it's very comfortable.

Thanks for sharing you thoughts on the Multi vs. Uly question. Of course I have no regrets about purchasing my Buell. it is without question one of the most engaging bikes out there and the now cliche grin is firmly plastered on my face every time I ride it. But the multi was in such a strong position on my list, it's nice to hear the impressions from those who have owned both.

Thanks.

Oh how I wish folks would listen when a Sales guy tries to say such silly boasts as:

But then, coming from a sales guy, would it be believable? }

I owned a Cagiva Gran Canyon side by side with the Uly. Had both for a year and finally sold the Cagiva. A really great motorcycle but the Uly was more comfortable, lot less maintenance, belt drive and I can adjust the headlight without taking the fairing off!! Ok, granted, it's not much of a headlight but it is easy to adjust! For those wondering why I'm mentioning this, it's that a Cagiva had a 900 Ducati engine in it and it was very similar to the multistrada, only better looking IMO.

Had a Uly and now have a Multi 1100 so I'll address a few things. I don't want anyone to think I'm talking bad about a Uly.

Mediocre gas mileage?
Multi get's a little better than my Uly did.

Dead nuts reliable?
Both are/were reliable. Not counting fans.

Uly was inexpensive to maintain?
Uly first service was $300.00 plus parts.
Multi was $245.00 with parts and synthetic.
I usually do my own after that.
Services for mileage above that will be more for the Duc if it's a valve adjustment service. It is not outrageous.
I've seen some 1125R 12K service prices (valve adjust) and the Multi is cheaper than it with valve adj. But, that's an 1125R not a Uly.

Equal fun factor?
Yes.

More Buell dealers?
About the same amount (Duc vs Buell) for me, but my previous dealer service with the Buell was crap. Duc service is good where I go.

No chain on the Uly.
Yes, but it's just a chain. Lube it once in a while. It's not that big of a deal.
Most chains don't break, but some belts do.
Obviously less maintenance with a belt.

Larger bags?
There are plenty of large bags available, but if you are talking about the Ducati performance side bags they will hold a full face helmet (34L). They look better than the Uly's in my opinion.

The Duc is fiddly?
Not sure what that means.

I've not really talked about the Duc on here because it's a Buell site. I had some issues with my Uly. I won't get into them as I don't want my post to come across as a Uly bashing, Duc praising post.

Buy what makes you happy and enjoy always works for me.

I will say that I'm very happy with the Multi.

I know at least Treadmarks and I have Ducati Hypermotard 1100s; it has a great motor.
I considered the Multistrada when I was looking at the Uly, but I didn't want to "put all my eggs in one basket."

My closest Ducati dealer is 6 miles away; now my nearest Buell dealer is 90 miles away. (The 2 previously closest dealers have dropped Buell.)

I have to agree with everything Dentguy said.

That being said, I still enjoy my Uly completely. It hasn't been perfect, but it is my everyday ride, and my distance ride. The Ducati is for occasional use, as the Hypermotard is similar to the Multistrada, but is still a different animal.

Being on either one just makes me want to ride MORE.

Frankly I think they are both great bikes and anybody who tells you they don't, from time to time, get a bit of a Duc-on is fibbing ya . . .

Let's be truthful . . . both have their unique sources of appeal and Buell and Ducati, unlike some of the bland Triumph and Japanese products, evoke elevated levels of passion.

I'm always warding off a "get a Monster" bug just for fun . . it so reminds me of the S-1 and the HyperMotard (I see them around town) has a real visual and visceral appeal.

My problem is that after I got this Ulysses . . . well, I'm just plain a happy camper but I still enjoy hearing about and seeing Ducatis. I've got a pretty comprehensive Ducati library and have had the pleasure of speaking for Ducati at some events and owe them a couple favors for loaning me their flagship store, and bringing in a Super Mono, to me to host a Buell party.

I hope you share your honest thoughts. . . you seem well spoken and I'm not sure it's ever hurt anyone to learn more.

I'll Chime in too using Dentguy's post format.

I also had a Uly and now have a Multi 1100S. Many of you remember the issues I had with my nightmare of a bike so I'm slightly jaded.

Mediocre gas mileage?
My Uly got 52 MPG all the time no matter where or how I rode it. My Duc gets 45 no matter where or how I ride it. I did swap the front cog down one tooth as soon as I got the bike though so that is a factor. I would rather get 45 on my Duc than 52 on that Uly I had though.

Dead nuts reliable?
My Uly was the most unreliable bike I have ever owned. It failed on me many times and caused me to question my sanity. I had all the problems stated on this board plus a few more. The dealership wasn't much help in fixing the problems without a lot of time and grief. My Duc was issue free until just recently when the Dashboard decided it only wanted to run in Euro. It didn't stop the bike from working, I just had to ride around in km instead of MPH for a little while. Dealership ordered new dash no questions asked and also found my shifter toe piece broken (not really broken, but missing the rubber and I didn't notice it cause the footpegs are not rubber) and a valve cover o-ring barely weeping and fixed both while the bike was in for dash.

Uly was inexpensive to maintain?
I did all my own Uly service and it was still expensive. Most expensive bike I've ever owned actually. I even got most parts at cost. It took several oil changes to realize the bike ran better on Rotella 5w-40 than any 20w-50 crap. I chewed through a crap set of original tires in 4300 miles. I had to upgrade to many '07 fixes on my bike at my expense to get the suspension and engine to work partially right. I had to farkle like crazy to get it partially comfortable. I had several thousands invested before parting ways.
My Duc has only cost me two oil changes so far. First service was free from dealer and it has needed nothing else. I've only added a rear fender to the bike and heated grips. In 13 months I've spent ~60 in oil changes and ~300 in farkles. It is amazingly perfect to me. Ranks up there with my KLR650 as best bike I've ever owned. It is the cheapest by far. Even cheaper than the KLR was.

I'll do all my own maintenance when the Duc is out of warranty. So far, most 1100's that I have heard of didn't need valve adjustments at 7500 miles and only a few at 15000. The shims kits aren't too bad and cover several adjustments if needed.

Equal fun factor?
The MTS is fun is every aspect and one of the best handling bikes I've ever ridden. Looking back, I never had fun on the Uly ever even when I thought I did and it handled like a farm truck.

More Buell dealers?
Only a couple more in my state. 3 to 1 AFAIK, but the Ducati dealer is awesome and the local Buell dealer is one of the worst in all 50 states.

No chain on the Uly.
Another downfall for the Uly IMHO. My belt was problematic thanks to a swingarm welded wrong at the factory. Chains are easy to clean and maintain and I trust it far more than that damn belt. Chains don't just snap. They wear over time and are easy to judge when needing replaced. Every story I read on here about someone packing for a trip, packs an extra belt. That is ridiculous.

Larger bags?
You can use the same bags on both bikes with the mounts from twisted throttle. I still have my Buell Topcase on my MTS, but rebadged it with a DP sticker.

The Duc is fiddly?
I have no idea what that means either, but I don't worry about my Duc not starting when I go out to the garage. My Uly was a complete crapshoot.

For me, a motorcycle is all about utility. I do very little pleasure riding, but lots of commuting. It better perform flawlessy and do what I need perfectly or it is a total loss. The Uly was a complete failure in this aspect, but mine was worse than most.

I will say that I'm ecstatic with the Multi.

I will also add that the two bikes are night and day IMHO. The MTS has superbly crisp, confidence inspiring handling, a far more useful engine and transmission and it feels about 300 pounds lighter than the Uly. The ergos for me are also perfect on the MTS and I never got them right on the Uly

Joel,
I remember your pain, I would have sold my Uly too. Good to hear that your Duc. is treating you like a bike should.

My '06 has never let me stranded in 44,000 miles. But I have replaced the belt and rear wheel bearings. Not a big deal to me.

I'm still waiting for a sport touring model from Buell. Hopefully they will come out with a model soon. (Lately that MG Norge has been calling my name.)

Joel,
Thanks for chiming in and expanding on some of my thoughts. It would take me a few days to type that much as I am so slow on the computer.

I'll quote something Joel mentioned that I didn't and I do agree with him.

"The MTS has superbly crisp, confidence inspiring handling, a far more useful engine and transmission and it feels about 300 pounds lighter than the Uly. The ergos for me are also perfect on the MTS and I never got them right on the Uly"

The Multi feels very connected, very solid.
The Uly's rubber mounts always made the whole bike feel very, well rubbery. But, That's just me. I know they serve a purpose.

I had some issues with my Uly (pinger), but Joel had way more with his. He gave me a lot of info and personal feelings on the Multi before I got one (he got his before I did). I had been looking at them for some time and when I hit a deer and the Uly was totaled, I started shopping.

Thanks again Joel for helping to steer me towards the Multi. I'm very happy with it.

The Multistrada forum I found (http://www.multistrada.net/index.php?page=2) has an active "Problem Area", plus additional reliability mentions in their general forum.
Broken frames without crashing? Hmmm.

And your point is?

Maybe you went to the Multistrada site to look for problems to post on here?
or
Maybe you were just trying to show that they have ocassional issues just like any other bike? Giving you the benefit of the doubt.

As a active user on Multistrada.net I'll say it's nice to have a seperate problem area so they aren't mixed in with the general forum stuff like on here.
Does it mean it they have more issues because they have a seperate section? No.
Doesn't make one right or wrong? Not in my opinion. It's just different there.

Additional reliability issues in the general forum?
No different than here.

Broken frames without crashing?
Just how many "Broken frames without crashing" did you find when you went looking for problems?

There is 1 post there titled "Cracked frame without crashing".
The bike is a 2005 with who knows how many miles or how it was treated in Australia.

Ducati is replacing the frame even though it's out of warranty.

Somebody could easily do a search on here for problems and come up with all kinds of stuff. Does it mean the bikes are bad. No.

This thread turned into a sort of Multi/Uly comparison. Obviously some people like the Uly and some like the Multi.
As I said before, buy what you like and enjoy it.

I just don't see the point of implying that because on another site there is a "problem section" or that somebody posted about reliability or a frame issue that the bikes have a problem. Maybe that's not how you meant it, but it looks that way. You could just as easily have posted the link and said, there are a lot of happy Multi owners on there just like Uly owners here. But, I guess where's the fun in that.

If you've owned both then please give your opinion.

Rayinla, good luck with your next purchase. No matter what it is.

IMHO you can't go wrong with either. Having owned several brands, Buells and Ducatis represent the ultimate in two wheeled nirvana. Most other rides involve taking a step (or two or three) backwards.

Though my ideal Duc/Buell garage would be a Uly and a Supersport...
