My June 08 manufacture XT has had an intermittent idling issue that has been very difficult to resolve.

Recap – Developed high idle around 3800 miles. After riding a minimum of 20 miles, the idle will intermittently hang at 2K RPM. Sometimes it will drop down to normal sometimes not. If the idle is high at a stop, I have noticed that the bike tends to hesitate up to the 3K RPM when accelerating from the stop. If the idle is normal when stopped, it will accelerate like normal.

The local shop technician has devoted a lot of time trying to diagnose the problem. They have replaced IAC o-rings, intake seals, verified all grounds, checked sensors and other issues as reported on this website to no avail. They have had difficulty reproducing the idling issue on the dyno and bad Chicago weather has interfered with road testing.

This past Thursday, they again had the bike on the dyno and luckily, the high idle issue raised its ugly head. This time they were able to capture it on the computer but still could not determine the cause. The technician then decided to move the main wire harness with his hand and the idle went back to normal. He then stripped the harness cover and started moving wires and the high idle started. Now he could reproduce the high idle but only if the bike was good and hot.

He could not find any obvious signs of broken wires in the harness, but obviously there is a problem in there somewhere.

They ordered a new harness and Buell wants them to send the old harness in for technical investigation.

Hopefully this will solve the very difficult intermittent issue. Calumet HD/Buell has devoted a lot of time to get to this point and I appreciate their hard work. I will keep everyone posted on result of the harness change out.

I you are in Munster Indiana, stop by their shop and check them out. They have a large number of bike right in front of the shop. The manager and owner both ride Buells.

Not that this will help since you have an 08' and mine is an 06' but mine use to hang up as you describe. Sort of went away on its own. May have been the TPS reset with ECMSpy or maybe the throttle cam was slightly hanging up and it cured itself. Make sure that your throttle cable isn't damaged somewhere and that your throttle cam completely retracts without effort. If it isn't a leaky intake seal then you need to rule out friction in the cable sheath or a weak throttle cam torsion spring. Just make sure it isn't some dried dead bug keeping your throttle from closing completely.

My '08 had the same issue, changing the ECM resolved the idle problem...

We ruled out mechanical issues quite awhile back. The throttle valve was completely closing leaving the IAC to control the idle speed.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Bartimus

They swap out an ECM and had the same problem.

Thanks

Well the first step it complete. The new wiring harness came in on Tuesday. The harness arrived only three working days after the shop ordered it. Can't beat that!

Next step, installation, testing and hopefully spring in the Chicago area.

Check for an intake leak while your at it.

Ooops didnt read all of your post. Mine acted just like that when the intake got hot and started leaking. Would hang then after a while it would just stick after it got hot.

Have them spray carb cleaner around the intake and make sure that the install wasnt the problem.

I picked up the completed XT today and rode approximately 70 miles to see if the intermittent high Idle Issue was resolved. The bike runs great! The technician working on this issue was have a difficult time but keep his eye on the prize.

In addition to the IAC rebuild, Intake rebuild, sensor replacements, ground verification and a number of other verifications. They installed the new wire harness and the bike still had the idle issue. Installed a new computer and success! They swapped out the computer earlier but it did not solve the problem. They suspect the bad wire harness damaged the computer.

It has been a long battle but it appears to be over. The shop did make it a little easier for me. They gave me a loner Ulysses to ride for the past few weeks. Calumet HD/Buell did everything they could to solve the problem.

The only issue I now have is the new harness reversed my duel headlight MOD. I will need to get back in there and change it again.

It does feel good to be back on my bike. Come on warm weather.
