I am very new to Buell( still don't own one) But have a chance to get a 97 M2 for about $2K. I haven't seen the bike yet but was still wondering what the difference is between the M and S models. I prefer more of a upright riding position so clip ons are not my style, Any thing I should look for ?. Oh and a pic of each would be nice. Don't ask for much do I . S1: M2: The S1 is IMO the very definition of a streetfighter. BADASS looking bike but not very comfortable for any type of distance. The M2 would be a lot more comfortable, but sacrifices a little of the "hooligan" image. Compromise and get an X1! To clarify - even though all S models have identical wheelbase, rake, and trail they are very different bikes due to differences in the location of footpegs, handlebars, and seating. S1 and X1 are both Lightning models - streetfighters. The X1 having the most aggressive geometry of the tubers. M2 Cyclone is the only "M" model tuber, and is a good midpoint between the streetfighters and touring models (according to the book 25 Years of Buell, 97-98 M2's have slightly different frame geometry than 99-02 M2's - the later models having 1/2 degree less rake, and 0.1" shorter trail) (Message edited by pkforbes87 on February 11, 2009) |

As it was described to me, the M2 is the least squiddly of the Buells. The 97/98 have basically a stock Sporty motor with improved breathing qualities. The M2 has lower footpegs and conventional forks. You can also mount touring bars on them for more height. The S1 enjoys a little more cult status with solo seating, high-end forks and a racier look, they are more in demand. In 99 the M2 was upgraded with alloy swingarm and thunderstorm heads. The same year the S1 was replaced with the fuel-injected X1. The best place to find pics is here in the classifieds... http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/21/ 1019.html 2k sounds like a good deal if it isn't thrashed. The 97/98 models have several recalls that should be addressed before you start breaking things. 15k miles is when a lot of problems usually start appearing, but nothing you can't remedy with basic wrenching skills and a little searching around here. By 20-30k miles you should plan on digging into the primary and gearcase for some basic upgrades. |

The 97 m2 will have the same engine, minus cams, as a 96-97 s1. They had lightning heads and were a bit more than a stock sporty engine. They are great bikes. I own one. Looks are somewhat similar to a s1 with the skinny body work. The pics above are not the correct ones for that m2. In fact that s1 that pk posted was a m2 at one point so you can always do the conversion. Thats what i paid for mine, and i wouldnt hesitate to pick it up. Also, i dont think the 97 m2 looks any less hooligan than a x1 does... (Message edited by guell on February 11, 2009) |

Well it looks like I am a offical member of the Buell collective now. I bought the M2 for $1500. Maybe I should have said I stole it but I did have to go pick it up. It needs a rear tire, which I am sure wont be the last and a good cleaning, a little paint and away we go.http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll105/4DWUDS/DS C03181.jpg?t=1234486372 |

The FLH guy is just pissed because a $1500 Buell will embarrass his $35k ultra-barge in just about every way. Congrats! |

At that price you can't go wrong. I do wish they held their value a bit more since I bought mine new but I have had years of fun on it. |

That's my little brother (height wise) and we had just come off a all nighter, so's he was a little grumpy that mourn (up until noon I think LOL). I have put a new tire on the back, the one on there had the air showing through and TWO plugs sticking out as well as a tread separation, and the next buy will have to be a rear shock, as it is now, there aint one, It just looks like one. Whats the best one going for this bike ? I saw the post about the M2 shock and mine has the remote resevior. (Message edited by 4dwuds on February 13, 2009) |

Nice Score! Glad the original owner didn't part it out. As for a shock, i have a Penske. It's a great unit. Totally rebuildable, but expensive. I found mine on Ebay 6 years ago, and i paid around $500 for it. Night and day difference in terms of handling. Enjoy your new ride. |

Get with Al at American Sport Bike and get a Penske or a Works. Both will be a great improvement over the Showa. Don't for get the forks, gold valve, seals, springs and brace with new tyres and you will not believe how good these bikes can handle. Joe (Message edited by bad_karma on February 14, 2009) |
