Towjam, i never expected the XR to have the same weight or power output as a Buell.

my Road King weighs more than a Buell and makes less power, but it doesn't make it a bad bike.

i would value your overall opinion of the new XR, since you're one of the few people posting about it who's actually ridden one.

so, like.......will there be any further reviews forthcoming??? : )

ps:

BTW sounds like your enjoying the meds its ok to blame the drugs.

Oldog, we're just funnin' around about the meds. i've been on a pretty mild regimen all along (since i got home from the hospital, anyway), and as of last week's visit with the ortho doc they've now ramped me down to an even milder regimen.

which is, as you can imagine, great news. : )

Towjam:

Nice write up and those are exciting photos of the reception. I have a soft spot for Sportsters and that was really cool.

It sounds to me like you are buying the bike for fun and enjoyment, not as a weapon to slay SV's, Buells, or Monsters.

My bet is that you will enjoy the heck out if it . . it is what it is and HD will make and sell all of them they can. They need this kind of thing at present.

Keep the reports coming.

That black, with the exhaust, completely changes the bike . . that is really good looking.

It would get you pulled over and your bike impounded (NY is cracking down on after market exhausts) but that really looks nice. . . and more of a tribute to the heritage of both the Sportster and the XR.

Yes but Trojan, that bike is not street legal. I could loose close to 100lbs of a 2009 XR1200, if I started with the 2003 XL883R that is already in my garage, weighs 495, shave 50 lbs from there... and I am still over the wt of the Buell. Damnit, looks like the only way to get the weight down is for a DIET for me the fatman riding.

I think you'll find it is street legal in a lot of places, maybe not on your street though.

(Not on mine either come to that, but the French are a pain for anything non-standard)

Towjam, nice review.

i enjoyed the humor (prolly 'cause i'm not a sweaty fat girl...)

i am SO damn glad i don't have to navigate that minefield of effin' advertising on HDF over here on good ol' BadWeB.

I just hope that enough US buyers step up to the plate and demonstrate to Harley that not all of their customers are assless chap wearing chrome polishing doo raggers.

hey cool, i'm only two outta the three - do i win a trophy or something?

That's an accurate statement! . . . I lasted long enough to read the review (it was well written a a great read) and then quickly escaped the ad-attack.

In "V-Board world" . . . I still like Discus.

Court,
You nailed it. This may be the first bike I've purchased where I had zero expectations of it being practical. I just ride locally and for fun.

Anyone buying an XR thinking they're going to school the Duc, CBR and Gixxer fanboys is going to have their ass handed to them the first time they get out on a long stretch of road. However as with Buells, the twisties are another story altogether.

As you said, "it is what it is".

And I absolutely can not think of any way you could have done better.

That is the part that I really like about the XR.

It looks fun. Period.

My bet is you'll enjoy the dickens out it.

That advertising style is the beloved platform of the canadian overlord of many sites, Vertical Scope owned by Rob Laidlaw.

Yes but Trojan, that bike is not street legal.

Our bike is fully street legal in the UK and most of Europe. It still has turn signals, headlight (hidden behind the quick release number board), tail/brake light etc, and the exhaust is fully E marked and 'noise legal' throughout Europe. It has a removable baffle for 'full fat' noise but I haven't even taken that out yet so it isn't as noisy as you may imagine (but still louder than stock thankfully!).

The only thing that may get you into trouble in Europe is that we have ditched the catalytic convertor.

Most of the weight has been saved by getting rid of some very heavy stock parts that were not required or replaced by lighter parts. Half of the dead weight alone was the stock exhaust muffler & catalyst, which 99% of owners will certainly ditch at the first opportunity.

>>>which 99% of owners will certainly ditch at the first opportunity.

I agree. The stock exhaust not only does not support but almost violates the homage the the real XR lines.

So there are no restrictions on exhaust in the UK? America is becoming more like Germany and Tüv in that we are seeing, at least in the NYC area, greatly heightened enforcement measures for things like aftermarket exhausts.

The one you have on your bike looks fabulous to me but in New York City you'd ride it for less than 30 days before watching your bike taken away on a flatbed. We may have to all move to England.

So there are no restrictions on exhaust in the UK?

Far more restrictions than most US states I'm afraid. Something like a D&D or Force pipe would land you incourt pretty quickly here in the UK.

Exhausts must be 'E' marked to be road legal, which means passing ever tightening European noise regulations. However, most aftermarket manufacturers get away with being louder by installing removable baffles in the tail pipe. With the baffles fitted the pipe is fully road legal, with the baffles removed it is a race can : ) if you get stopped on the road then it is a case of 'Sorry officer, the baffles must have come out, as they were there when I left home ; )'

Provided the exhaust doesn't have 'Not for rad use' or Race use only' stamped on it you can normally get away with a loud (ish) pipe so long as you don't take the P*ss.

Court, i suspect that *real* enforcement of "overly" loud exhausts is happening only in major metro areas.

here in rural Virginia, and indeed in most of my travels, you'd never, ever be bothered by what exhaust you're running, unless, of course, you happened to be "taking the piss" next to an officer of the law.

which i try never, ever to do.

The same folks (Nancy Pelosi is on the Today Show at this moment explaining how she will choose a "Car Czar" to oversee the auto industry) who are about to own the car business, just bought the banking business and are establishing the domestic militia have been on a roll.

NYC represents, I am sure . . . low hanging fruit. My riding partner, stopped twice for the exhaust on his Hayabusa, had his bike loaded on a flatbed and impounded for his inspection sticker being 4 days past due. He was pissed because they'd come to his house and taken his pistols when one of those permits lapsed as well.

It's a new world and the reason HD is running from the performance parts market as fast as they can go.

and, as you pointed out yesterday, your main man Barack says it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

grim words, indeed.

and what if it never gets better??? : (

Just watch the news, Il governor hauled away in handcuffs for trying to sell BO's senate seat. Our only real hope is that those like Pelosi are truely corrupt and eventually they get caught going that one step too far. Its not that power corrupts but that positions of power attract the corruptible. Watch em close and arrest em when they take that last step over the line. They really can't help themselves it's in their nature.

Four years of wiretapping the Governor of Illinois, god those will be popular on Youtube.

Nope, didn't know, nor do I care either. I've watch his cyber pimp site style. He enters with a usual mass exodus of members. A Monster board kept hope that they would be saved from the template but cold reality hit them hard. Most moved to a new board. So I guess one could say he inspires new sites, to escape him.

I haven't looked to see what your costs are for sponsors. I think it was mentioned recently that they aren't much. Which helps allow little guys, like the creative people around here, to make something and then sell it to other members. When he came into a Duc site the fees went from like $100-200 to $1800. Not exactly little guy friendly. Advertiser money is his driving ambition.
I try to avoid his realm as much as I'm able and make his advertisers the last I consider. Though he has acquired more and more of them, each with their own flashing ad, so finding businesses not associated with him is difficult. It will be interesting to see how any drying up of advertising dollars effects him and his sites.
