discuss jk , when my mother died 25 yrs ago , i had her diamond made into a ring that i've worn since . that is til this last summer on a residential job site . hot summer morning ,ring fit tight already since i'd not had it resized in 25 yrs ,so i put it on my pinkie . mid morning realized it was gone . only one of two cases . i'd lost it in the back yard while taking a butt break or one of the subcontractor laborers scooped it . still wonder ,but the elaborate garden in the back could hide osama bin laden . sorry ,long story short, i lost something i'd like to find . any of you have any experience with metal detectors ? looking at http://whiteselectronics.com/content/view/79/50/ |

My neighbor has one of those 1100 dollar DFX 300 models and he rarely uses it. He has a cheaper one that he prefers. He says the expensive one has so many settings it's a PIA. |

Years ago a friend of mine was really into metal detectors. What I learned from him is there were two brands considered to be the best. White and Garret. Everything else was considered just a toy. That was a long time ago though. |

Neighbors girl friend tossed two rings out the front door in a hissy fit. I borrowed a cheapo detector from a friend and found one of them. ......they was half happy to get the one back. We never did find the other one.........even tho we had to be in range. On my other hand, detector dudes scour the park across the street after the 4th July carnival leaves.....I'm sure they find ALL the nuts, bolts and BB's I seed over there............. |

ahh, metal detectors .... you shoudn't "need" a hi- dollar detector to find a dropped ring , because the ring should still be on top of the ground or worst-case scene 1" deep. the more $ you spend for a detector generally means it will detect deeper than a cheap one ! TESORO makes some decent M/D's that are not too costly nor are they "junk". ($150.- 300) check your area for relic hunter clubs or beach hunters (they even have competition meets .?.)most relic hunters etc. will help you find your ring for nothing or gas money.did any historic battles take place or are there old house-sites in your area ? if so that could entice them to seARCH your property. good luck. |

That sucks. Sorry to hear it. I don't know anything about metal detectors but would think they only work on ferrous metals. I'm quite sure your ring isn't. Check to see if your ring is even detectable before buying one. |

skin ... the key word is "METAL"- detectors .the more expensive detectors can (to some degree ) identify differant types of metals (gold, silver, lead, alum. etc.)the(high-end) detectors make a differant sound or display for differant types of metals. |

I'm pretty sure detectors work on any metal, even pot metal. For sure, they detect aluminum zip-tabs(not to be confused with Just_ziptab......) |

I wonder how it detects non-ferrous metals ? Not enough to research and find out but I wonder none the less. |

Skinstains: All metals have some effect on inductance. Ferrous metals increase it, non-ferrous metals tend to decrease inductance. Both are effects can be detected, with predictable results, hence the ability to discriminate between steel and aluminum etc. |
