2002 S3 FI This happend 3 or 4 times 2 different tanks of fuel. It sounded like I ran out of gas for a while sputterd started to die check engine light came on for mabey 30 sec and went off. I thought it may be some bad fuel but now i am not sure. It is intermitent. I have a Vance Hines and a race ECM. any sugestions?? I hope I am not headed for a break down. |

My 2000 does this occasionally after a steady run and then taking off from a stop. No idea why. I can usually catch it before it dies, but it has cut out on me completely a couple of times. Kind of dangerous with people running up your behind when the light changes. I also have the V&H and race E.C.M. |

Water in the tank maybe? I had the same thing happen to me minus the check engine light. I finally took the tank off and drained the gas and that's when I found the water. I now tape up the gas cap when washing it and haven't had a problem in 2 years. |

5liter, I never thought to try and tie it into when I have washed my bike. Good idea with the taping. I will try it many months from now when the snow disappears. |

Mine used to sit outside when I was at work. It rained often so I probably picked up some then. I also put a new O-ring on the gas cap to help keep water out. I'm retired now so the bike doesn't sit out too often. |

Could also be gas tank venting is blocked. The tank vent valves have been known to stick shut, thus temporarily creating a vacuum in the tank and hindering fuel flow. If so, try opening the gas cap and see if the bike instantly recovers. |
