Title says it all, we destroyed the tumblers but got the cap out. All and I mean all the guts were corroded to hell. This ever happen to anyone here, and how much will a new key and cap cost? And will I be able to get the right lock set in the cap? |

Oh man...I've always been afraid of breaking mine off. It's always been a pain in the ass to get the key in and out of the cap. Should I use some of that graphite stuff to smooth it out and avoid breaking it? |

I almost had this happen yesterday and I only have 1 key. What I did was to push on the cap and turn it to the left. Then I tried the key again and it turned without any trouble. I guess my cap was tweaked a little last time I reinstalled it. I think i'll squirt a little WD40 in there just as a precaution. I need to get another key made asap. If your key won't turn, try pushing on the cap and turning it with your hand. There's a little play in the cap even when it's locked. |

I've found that turning the key slightly clockwise then counter to get it off helps and you aren't forcing it to turn like you would be if you just went counterclockwise. |

No I mean it didn't even go all the way in, it broke off 1/4" in. Just the tip baby! |

Sorry about the key. For the others, go with white lithium grease. Comes in a spray, single use tubes if you're lucky. WD40 is great for what it's intended to do. This isn't one of those. The lubrication of WD40 is very short term and more for electrics than metal. WD40 will free up a lock, grease will keep it lubricated. |

Ferris, about 2 years ago I had a crack head attempt to gain access to my tank, I suspect he thought it was the ignition. He had used a screwdriver that damaged to lock. The dealer ended up drilling the cap to get it out. The dealer wanted ~$50 for a cap (IIRC), but they thought I was nuts for not accepting that. I didn't want to carry 2 keys. So I had the entire bike rekeyed. New cap, new ignition, and new seat lock. I think it cost me ~$300, but I thought it was worth it. The dealer thought I was high... But was more than willing to take my $. |

I squirt WD40 into mine whenever the key starts feeling tight. Seems to fix it for a while. |

A couple times during the summer when the key took more force than I cared to try at the gas station, I've dripped a few residual drops of diesel fuel into the key slot by holding the nozzle over it and pushing the key in and out. The oilyness of the diesel helped to unstick the cap. Then I put a few more drips on the latch mechanism to make it easier the next time I needed to remove the cap. Didn't cost a thing. |

It's too bad Buell hasn't come up with a less expensive ($130 is way too much, imho) alternative for a keyless gas cap. Even Harley has a simple push button retrofit for their FLTs for around $20... |
