I'm planning on going up there sunday, with a buddy from work. He'll ride his triumph daytona and I'll ride the lightning.
I might not go if there is rain in the forcast during the day.
I think my buddy is going to stay at my house sat night and we will leave in the morning for vir. Anyone else is welcome to crash at my house sat night if you wanna ride up with us in the morning. Its only about 50 minutes from my house.
-mike
Hopefully it will not rain, I'm pretty excited!
pm me if interested in staying over.

Well tonight on my way home from work I decided to switch over to the odometer (now that I have a clock on my bike I leave it set to the clock...) and I saw the mileage at 10,003 miles. I bought the XT on February 23rd. That is 5 months and 20 days to the best of my calendar assisted counting abilities to get 10,000 miles accumulated.

How does this compare with the S2? I bought the S2 on June 6, 1995 (so yes, the warranty ended on 6/6/96...) and I had put 10,000 miles on it before I had to park it for winter in Wisconsin, even though I waited until I completed the MSF course before I really started riding it. I rode it to my final MSF class day, but didn't really start riding it until I got my motorcycle endorsement. In Wisconsin I was foolish and parked the bikes from November 1st-April 1st to save 25% on insurance. Saving 25% for not riding for 5 months doesn't sound like all that good of a deal in retrospect but you have to consider that most of those months the roads were covered either in snow or salt. So with the S2 I accumulated 10,000 miles in 4 months and 25 days of ownership. And it took me until May 30, 2005 for me to turn 100,000 miles on the S2. This was due in part to having other bikes to ride during those years:
Personal bikes: 1999, 2000 and 2001 Dyna Wide Glides, 2003 V-Rod.
Company bikes: pretty much any and every tube framed Buell, multiple development Firebolt XB9R's, multiple Blast!'s, multiple V-Rod's (P4's at the time), and various H-D development and production bikes.
Miles put on my personal bikes:
'95 S2 - 117,000 (so far)
'99 DWG - 9,000
'00 DWG - 10,000
'01 DWG - 11,000
'03 V-Rod - 41,000 (so far - I'll be putting at least 2,500 more on it starting Saturday, August 23rd)
'08 XB12XT - 10,000 (so far)
That totals to 198,000 miles so far on bikes that I have paid for the privilege of riding and calling my own. Add to this approximately 50,000 miles (which can't be documented) of riding Buell & H-D development and production bikes and I'm nearly at the quarter million mile mark. All in just over 13 years of riding. I think I will celebrate this milestone by having some absinthe tonight!

All of this leads me to my continued desire to do an iron butt ride with the XT-BOLT. I was disappointed that there were no other C3 members to do one with coming back from Homecoming this year. But in all actuality, it was probably for the best - with all the partying in Germany for the BORG MSM and then all the partying in Milwaukee with the Germans that followed me back for Homecoming I wouldn't have been in any shape to ride 1,000 miles continuously. So I'm trying to figure out a destination or maybe even a loop for those souls so inclined to do an iron butt. One thought that came to mind is Mardi Gras as I have always wanted to check out New Orleans - I don't have to explain the allure of New Orleans to those who know me - but that is just shy of 1,000 miles from New Bern (and less miles for most of you not this far East) and is probably not a possible destination for those who are married or have a significant other. One possibility that I haven't run the numbers on is to do a loop of the "4 'corners' of NC". Not knowing the mileages and considering that the NC Highway System usually doesn't have good roads to get from here to there may be another obstacle to prevent this idea from becoming a practical reality.

So does anyone:
a) Have any interest in doing an iron butt (1,000 miles in 24 hours) ride?
b) Have any suggestions on a destination? The destination can be anything - a motorcycle or non-motorcycle event, a motorcycle or non-motorcycle museum, or just someplace COOL to end up at.
Obviously, if it's 1,000 miles in one direction the best thing to do would be to do it over a 3 day weekend - 1 day to get the 1,000 miles there and 2 days to recover (somewhat) and do the 1,000 miles back - but that, too, is open for discussion. Anyone got any ideas (even if you aren't interested in doing the iron butt)?

Too late - already started on some absinthe...
1313
BTW, I'm also looking for a reason to not go to Greenville for Halloween this year. Any suggestions for something to do on Halloween? It's a Friday this year, which is COOL! And it doesn't have to be all that local. Although I'm not too sure about taking anymore time off this year...as I don't have all that much left...which means I will probably not be able to make the Indy GP races as originally planned - BUMMER!!!

I really do not know if I will be able to make it to the Moto GP in Indy but I want to. My schedule has been pretty full and my play money is tight. I need to make a final call when I get back from WV Rally. If I do decide to go I know I will be able to stay with friends or family. I believe 1313 is going. If so we can ride up together.

You know what we need? A C3 ride and dinner C3 event. Maybe something in and round the Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Durham area some time in September. I get a chance to see some of you here and there, but we really need to see if we can all get together for a ride and or dinner one weekend night.

1313, I was married in New Orleans during a snow storm on the coldest day of the century there, 12-23-89. (Trish's Dad said "I told you it would be a cold day in Hell when you married my daughter). Trish is a French/Italian who's roots go back a few generations there. Her immediate family moved away after the flood ... it was too depressing. The place is coming back, slowly. It's still cool and I like it.

I'll host a C3 BBQ similar to the Advrider one we had here. Right downtown in Southern Pines with a firepit in the back yard and bars right around the corner. I like to grill.

1313- I'm interested in the IBA ride. If we stay inside NC as an option there is a specific certification for it. Will be home 3 Sept - early/mid Nov. and then it is back to work on the road. I've done a couple IBA certs to Wichita KS. Old town is a cool place to stay & party. You can even hit route 66 in a couple spots on the way and still make good time.

M2nc- Ride & dinner sounds great. I'm game...been to long.

Tim,
Old Town is definitely a cool place to take in, and I'm not discounting it, but I've already been to Wichita (to visit with Big Dog Motorcycles - apparently Eddie Money was staying at the same hotel I was at...). Whatever we (all those who will participate) come up with is fine with me!

I, too, agree the C3 ride and dinner sounds like a kick arse idea!

An homage to Cincinnati?

Last weekend of September would be a great time to have a C3 dinner here in Raleigh. We are having the Rally in Raleigh, with the HD and Buell demo fleet here on Friday and Saturday. I will be working most of the time, but would be able to join everyone for dinner and I will be attending the Metallica tribute band concert. They are still working on the site, but check it for updates: http://capitalcitybikefest.com/index.htm

The Southern Pines contingent is leaving this evening and should be setting up camp at the track around dusk. Look for a big Coleman cabin tent, a blue/gray BMW HP2 and a black BMW R1200S. What a great weekend to camp at the track; full moon, a great facility, bikes, folks, and fun.
