It seems I have a short in the connector under the dash. My dash lights and tach fail to work at times. Looking for tips on repair or replacement. How hard is it to replace pins or sockets and where can they be purchased?

There is a tool kit (available at auto stores) that is basically like a variety of sizes of sort-of hypodermic needles. The pin of your connector goes inside the tool, while the tube wall of the tool squeezes the barbed section of the pin back to allow the pin to be withdrawn.

I have in the past just cut off connectors and soldered on bullet type. Probably not the best long-term idea. I had a guy in an auto-electic shop do a connector for me with the proper tool and I was rightly impressed. But I think the tool set is a little pricey for occasional use. Although you can never have too many tools.

Had issues there myself, and the dash and such are really sensitive to bad grounding. I added several more.

Good point, Jim. I added a wire from my tripletree to the frame on the Sportster to stop from burning up headlight bulbs at an insane rate. Everything on the forks grounded through the steering head bearings so when you greased them, the whole system went down. (They redesigned it with a separate ground in '94. 38 years of bad design before they fixed it.)

The connectors on the S2 are standard Molex connectors. Any good electronics shop should have pins an sockets. Radio Shack even used to have them. Not sure if they still do or not..

Alternatively you could go to to APPENDIX "A" - CONNECTOR REPAIRS in your Buell Service Manual where the entire section (with several pages specific to Molex) is devoted to maintaining, repairing and all the tools needed for Buell the various connectors found on Buells.

A Service Manual is money in the bank.

Thanks for the help all. I may stop by Radio Shack and get some new pins and sockets and repair what I have. Court the S2 manual I have does not have a appendix or cover connector repairs. Thanks again.

Good point . . the manuals, like the bike, have had improvements over the years. If you need me to scan and send the entire Molex Appendix just drop me a note.
