I've ridden an Electra-Glide since '92. Its comfortable, big, slow, and good-looking. Great for the long haul.
Since I got into Buells, I now take turns riding the FLHS and XB9S, and the big twin gets tossed into corners like I never used to do. Buell made a better rider out of me. |

Just chiming in...
I've got my '03 XB9R and a '00 FLSTF.. Fat Boys Rule! LOL.. I love the bike for cruising and road trips where you want to haul stuff or a passenger. It's comfortable and reliable and has plenty of power for that kind of riding.. Will it carve like a Buell? No way in hell, but then that's not what it's for..
Get yourself that ride that makes you happy.. and ride it.. If you have different moods (err modes) for riding.. then get different bikes.. I did!

Be sure to take a look at the new Road King Custom. It is already lowered and has lots of custom pieces also. Put a set of Rhinehart pipes on it, a high flow kit and re-map the EFI and you will love it. Yes as a matter of fact I also sell these like Dave.

I remember when Terminator 2 came out I really wanted a Fat Boy. I thought it would be the coolest bike to own. Well, I still have never owned one. Maybe someday. Or a Road King. Or a FXR Police Special. Or a Royal Enfield Bullet. Seriously, I think it'd be fun to putter around town on one of those Enfields.
And there's always either an XB9S or XB12S. I think I would enjoy either one of these.  |

My $.02,
I have a 1998 Electra Glide, A 2000 X1, and a '68 BMW. Each has a distinct personality and purpose. A Fat Boy would be a very nice ride on those days when you want to slow down, smell the roses, and enjoy the day.
Sport bikes are fun, cruisers are fun, antiques are fun. There is more to enjoy in motorcycling than we'll ever have time for! |

re: multiple bikes- Bought my first of many H-D's in 1971, now have a 94 Roadking and 91 RS, I love the Roadking- it's about as multi'purpose as any big bike available. I hate to say it but I'm personally more confident on it than the Buell, though riding the Buell has made me a better rider too. The wife will swipe the RoadKing in a heartbeat, leaving me to the Buell, and the turbo charger-induced shenanegins that tend to ensue. An FLHT will be our next HD. |

I agree about the FLHT. I was looking for a Road King but couldn't find one without a massive mark up (in '98). An HD employee who was sympathetic to the problem suggested an Electra Glide; effectively the same bike with additional accessories for the same sticker price and no waiting line!
We bought an FLHTCI, but the FLHT really is a bargain in the M/C market. |

i went thru the motorcycle crazies about 3 years ago. it started with an flht,then a fatboy, a deuce, an x-1 buell, a hayabusa, a v-rod, another deuce, a sportster, and currently a dyna sport and a m-2 buell. alas, this may be my last harley. the reason that i like harley and the m-2, is that you can wrench the bikes yourself and with the harley a million chrome parts are available. on the downside, im getting tired of getting ripped off by the stealers and the attitude some harley owners have toward owners of other makes of bikes. the next bike in my horizon? i want a v-max. there is a german shop here in daytona that does some nice custom work on them. |

I think thats what really turned me off was the Harley Crowd and how they sneer at other brands, even the Buell. I am glad to be rid of that group.
They really hated it when on a ride I pull out of the middle then zoom ahead to the next gas stop and wait for them.
Think I'll start my own Buell Group and be the only one that way I can only piss off myself on rides.
You know if I had to have a touring maching I do think it would be a 2001 or newer Gold Wing. A friend here on the island has one and he calls it the sportbike of the touring machines (If that even exists).

last year i was invited to a ride at killercreek harley, with several hundred harleys. i was kind of proud of the custom paintjob i just put on my x-1, so i decided to ride it instead of the v-rod. as the group was going down the road, i looked at the big hole in the parade. none of the harley riders wanted to ride next to the buell. anyone who would care what someone else rides, has issues in their lives. but to be quite honest, it was the same deal with the v-rod. they never caught on with the harley crowd either. i had the first one in town. one day it was parked in helen ga and a group of harley riders parked nearby. one of the women saw it and ran over to look at it. her dude screamed at her," dont you go over there, thats not a real harley"! |

the attitude you describe is exactly the same thing that's turned me off to the whole "lifestyle" crowd . . . . while there are certainly exceptions (Nevco, Dyna and others) the screeching "get a real bike" from pillion riders and the wannebe outlaw attitude of dentists and investment bankers on their newe 100th anniversary scoots is very wearing . ..
while this does not alter the fact that HD is making some nice bikes, it does, I think, limit the traffic in dealerships . . . . while Dave in Waterloo would give a friendly greeting to a Honda rider that walked in, and he's not the only one, the "ya gotta know the secret handshake to get in the club" sttitude espoused my many will keep that Honda rider riding red . . ..

Now we also can't paint all Harley Owners that way either.
Its the select few that makes it bad for the rest. The other thing is the comment "wannebe outlaw attitude of dentists and investment bankers on their newe 100th anniversary scoots ". There is a place for those guys and thats "Together" Let them have their little outlaw badass group. They think they can pop down $28,000.00 and all of a sudden "Buy a Lifestyle and the friends that go with it". The other problem I saw was that I have friends who ride other brands and whenever they would tag along with me to the Harley stuff it was almost like we had some kind of a contagious rash we would spread to them. "Don't park that red bike next to my FXERFART as I might get Honda germs on it".
Thats what I like so much about the Buell Community - we are a bunch of riders that enjoy riding more than posing and are willing to help out another motorcyclist without question. Sort of like an unknown brotherhood of Buells.
I really found that out at the 20th Anniversary where everyone was so acodommating and friendly.

Bomber...Thanks for the compliment. I just enjoy bikes and wanted to get a HD this time around. No attitude. In fact, I am still looking for a white with a dab of blue riding jacket to match my jeans and tennis shoes. Yep, am different in every way! LOL
The WG is quick, smooth and handles well even in the twisties and you know how I ride. I think the big difference is that it allows me to slow down, smell the roses and enjoy a more relaxed pace...not to mention, preserve my drivers license.
Come to think of it, the X1 has a similar effect in the sport bike realm. You get to ride quick and smooth but not living in the 8.0K plus rev range where stuff happens way too quick.
Personally, I like the Honda's for their performance and longevity. The ST1100 and now the ST1300 are my favorites. Have friends with over 250,000 miles on them and no major service problems. Needless to say, that would be my bike of choice if I moved back to California and could only have one bike.
However, living in the Milwaukee area, the Buell/Harley combo are the approved mode of two wheel transportation, even from the non-riding public. LMAO

Newfie/Nevco . . . .fully agreed . . . .the attitude of a few can mess it up for the many (lots of examples of that, certainly) . . .as for the instant biker trash wannabes, certainly there is a place for them in motorcycling . . . .. I do not wish to imply that there isn't . . . simply that my place in motorcycling is different from theirs (hopefully by at least a mile and a half {grin})
truthfully, HD has a couple of products that come close to speaking to me, but the ergos are keeping me away . . .. the Dyna, with "mid-set" foot controls is very very close to what I'd build (sorta nighttrainish), but the bars set etc would also have to be greatly altered to suit my tastes . . . .. . just aint confy going down the road feet first . . . . I plan on my last ride (in a hearse) being in that attitude . . .til then, nose first for me! |

Bomber...Oh gosh, the feet first thing is just too funny. Haven't ridden in that position since 1992 and it took some real Deja Vu to get back into the mind set.
Biggest drawback is not being able to take a load off when riding the rough stuff. Then again, the low C/G, cushy saddle, softer suspension and lower speeds help compensate. However, they won't help when the front end begins to wash out.
Considering the overall handling of the Glider, I really have a hard time with the "foot dragger" comments you and others made in other threads. This thing is so stable in stop'n'go's that I seldom put my feet down, even with a passenger. Conclusion is that the "Foot Draggers" must really be incompetent!!!
Now, if only my legs were a little longer... |

I can't comment on why folks drag their feet, only that they do . . . when I was first learning to ride (on my buddy's Flying Merkle), getting your feet on the pegs was a sign of skill and competence . .. he used to smack be about the head neck and shoulders repeatedly for dragging my dogs on teh pavement . . . . . |

Well... quite the topic indeed... I have always loved BMW's especially old ones, and if I could find an old one (before 1965) and (around 850 cc's) that has the right price on it and is in pretty good shape I would snag it.
Thing is with the Harley 'crowd'... some of them are big yuppie posers, and some of them are smelly, rough and rowdy. But all in all, every Harley owner I have got to know personally I have really liked AND now there is one I really like lots and lots and lots... and I would like to populate the world with little Harleys with.
OK... so that is too much information, but if you want to 'pigeonhole' any one group... it is a somewhat worthless endeavor.
I don't like Harleys because they are heavy, expensive, handle like you are riding a mack truck... etc, etc, etc.
I do like Harleys because of how they sound, they are American and I could probably sit on one for a 1000 mile day far more comfortably than my M2.
That is my .02 cents worth... for what it is worth.... bikes are like MEN, you only know what they are really about if you have been riding any particular one for a long, long time!!!
Hahahahaha... I am sick sick sick! It is getting cold out up here...

And you know something about the Harley Crowd, I much rather hang with the smelly rough and rowdy ones than the yuppies buying lifestyles. Its not only Harleys either these days the Yuppies are now trying to make their way into the metric cruisers and even some sportbikes

sidenote: it snowed last night. i went out on Pelican Lake with our biologists for a Walleye survey... we saw two HUGE musky, lots of pike and some big suckers too. interesting. went to bed at 1130 pm and wake up at 8 am and everything is covered in white... WTF ??? or FTW !!!

It's a 1968 BMW R69S, the last year of the earles fork; notice that it has a swing arm and shocks in the front as well as the back. The front end dosen't dive while braking, it rises a little! Very smooth freeway ride, 42 horsepower. The original tool kit is under that rubber knee pad- see the lock?
My co-worker gave it to me for clearing a shed he wanted to tear down. I brought it home, cleaned the carbs, changed the oil, and rode it for five years. During that time I collected NOS parts for an eventual restoration, which were easy to get in the early '80s. As a result, the bike has no reproduction parts; everything is either original or factory spares. It has a trophy for "Best German" at the 1994 Cycle World bike show at Pomona, CA.
My point here is to compare this to a Fat Boy. Similar seating position, cool retro-styling, and plenty of power for real world ticket-free riding!
I should point out that the headlight mounting brackets were upside down in this picture. Normally the headlight is half-again lower.

My cruiser ride is a valkyrie tourer (like a road king, hard bags, big windshield, 3 lites up front) and I think, other than the gas mileage, that's it's a great bike. Notice that I don't say "better than a _____" That's all personal opinion, and each to his own. The really cool thing (I'm a positive thinker) is that the Harley crowd won't wave to me when I'm on one of my Buell's (s-2 or 2-3), must be they think it's a "rice burner", but when I'm on the Valk, most wave, must think its a Road King. Some even wave, then quit halfway through. Come on folks, we're all riding because we love to ride. Pick what's best for your kind of riding, and ENJOY!!!! |
