Just got back from the Dragon...here's my question: In a situation where there is a lot of engine braking (like a track), or in overrun (like on a hill), and the ECM re-learns for that funky situation and the end result is spitting, popping, and poor running UNTIL you ride it again in Closed Loop/Flatish roads and it "heals itself", SHOULD YOU SIMPLY RUN OPEN LOOP FOR THAT RIDE (ie. the track or Deals Gap)??
Gunter, a while back you posted the response to my AFV question:
"If you don't want AFV to change (why?), go open loop."

Would this be a situation where you really don't want closed loop at all? 318 curves in 11 miles running in mostly in 2nd and 3rd with lots of engine braking and time in overrun, and doing that all day for days at a time...

The Uly RAN great once I got her moving, but by the end of the trip the idle was so terrible, popping, quitting, spitting...it was embarrassing. People thought I may have crashed it and trashed the engine based on how it sounded in the parking lot. Then I rode the 300 miles home, closed loop, straight interstate for 150 miles and the bike was "healed"...99 AFV, perfect TPS right were I left it, perfect idle. No, it's not stock, but for what its worth I'm obsessed with checking things out in ECMspy after almost every ride, and consistently see similar numbers. Any thoughts? Go easy on me if this is completely ignorant rambling.

If you need full control of the mixture, then you have to go open loop and adjust the map as needed.

Thanks Gunter. Now I'm just wondering if anyone actually ever does that for situations like this. Are there potential negatives to do this for a short period of time (assuming the values in the map are good)?

Its important that your map remains as close to stoich or you will burn it up (engine).
14.7 to 1.
This can be confirmed by data logging & running the log with the map used in logging, thru MegaLog viewer, VE analyzer.

So to "go open loop" are you simply turning off the o2 sensor?

I never touch it for the Dragon....and never have a problem during or after....use the torque of the engine, there are no straightaways per se...

( I looked for you on the cover of Killboy, but ya didn't make it :-) )

Killboy seems a bit behind the other photo people in terms of getting the pics up. That's such a cool road. Had to attach the lunch box on the back for a beer run Monday evening. Tuesday we started running it a 7:30 in the morning, not another soul to be seen. We had a blast, and hated to leave so quickly.

I live about 25 minutes from the Dragon and run it all the time year round. I have never experienced any of the issues that you described on my '06 Uly or the '05 XB12R that I had b/4. Both bikes were/are bone stock.

To clarify a bit, I rode the Dragon a couple times then did a loop to Robbinsville and everything was good. I then however started just doing the 10 or so mile stretch between Deals Gap Resort and the overlook, so no breaks, straights, or flat spots. It was after doing that for a couple hours that things started acting funny. Like I said, once I got going home, everything evened back out perfectly and ran great. Again, thanks for all the input.

Yeah, I gotta admit I'm jealous of you locals. I'm from West Virginia, now stationed in South Western Virginia and like to think we've got some great roads...and we do...but nothing like that. I'm definitely making this trip an annual (or semi-annual depending on my wife) event. We met some great people, saw some amazing riding on some awesome bikes, and some stupid riding by others. I'll never forget meeting a guy with a girl on the back of his R1 mid corner and seeing him put a knee down (and her's was pretty close). It was really cool...though not sure very smart, but he was good. Anyway, all that to say it was great trip, and everyone made it back safe, bikes in one piece.

I live an hour and a quarter away from the Dragon. Been there many times. Ridden it fast melting tires, medium no chicken strips, and mediocre. Maybe your bike was just dizzy!??.................................................. .................................................. ..What?..........it could happen!

Uly1080 Just got back from 4 great days in W.Va. The dragon is ok, I do not like all the bikes and cars. Seems sort of dangerous. Went as far west as New River Gorge Bridge. My riding friend wanted to go over the old bridge down by the water. Anyway great roads, 3 is terrific, but the road going into "Paint (whatever, don't remember the rest of the name)" from Va. on the eastern side of the state is terrific. I think it is 211, but I am not sure.
