There's been a couple canard and double-delta winged single-engined aircraft flying around all week. Best I can tell they look like Saab Viggen's...cool looking as all hell...but what the hell are they doing around here?

I was way off. I called the nearby Naval base and found out. It's these guys
using these planes

Pretty strange stuff. Apparently the Navy and Marines have purchased several for training purposes.

Swedish invasion?

Maybe Sweden is finally sick of all the ABBA and Ace of Base jokes.

Red Flag is out that way. The military loves to use & invite foreign planes to fly in gaming exercises. Keeps the skills sharp

Red Flag occurs out west. Always wanted to take that trip to Vegas, never got the chance.

Where in the west does Red Flag happen at?

Interesting. I live in Jax and I haven't seen those jets flying around. The link to ATAC lists the F-35 Draken as one of their jets, but the first pic in this thread is definitely a Viggen.
I'll have to scan the skies a lot more. What base are they flying out from?

I just love it, even your own military is outsourcing from the private sector.
Makes me wonder who's friends are pocketing your tax dollars & who's jobs got cut to pay for it.

Yes it would be Nellis(Las Vegas).

The Air Guard used to have a version(Sentry Independence) that took place in the middle of Wisconsin.

I'm thinking that maybe these planes are part of a secret Military plot to alter our weather. They're trying to make it look like the Euro's are doing it! Bastards.

Damn, he's tumbled to our cunning scheme of renting the US military all it's equipment, so that when they want to go to war we can say that it's already out on hire to somebody else.
We'll have to think of something else now.

Hmmmmm

Time Share leasing scheme for combat aircraft.

Secdef to the pres:"Sir, we only have one day where we can have all the aircraft. We can not go to war with X after this date."

Pres:"Why?"

Secdef:"X has their timeshare slot following ours."

The first pic is what I thought I saw. The second is what they actually were. They were flying out of NAS Jax. I seem to be one of the only people around here to notice...or at least the only one that cares.

Oh, OK. I thought you took that pic. I've been scanning the skies every time I hear a jet fly over. I have yet to see any "foreign" jets.

I should take some photos next time Paul Allen takes out one of his aircraft.

His huge collection is almost all restored to flying condition (at HUGE expense). It is wild to be woken up by a WWII Flying Fortress overhead. Or worse a ME109.

He does have a flying Zero somewhere.

Private sector contracting has been a part of our Military for a long long time.
No jobs were "cut" due to these contactors, in fact, quite to the contrary. They create many many jobs by doing what they do. Moreso than what the military would generate by doing it themselves.
Tax dollars, well, as much as I detest our current tax system, this is one of the areas that our taxes were actually designed to be used for, maintaining and training the military. And since these type of companies are in the private sector, the tax monies that are spent are actually put back into the local economy rather than redistributed to folks whom the politicians have} decided need a free ride.

I think the plane in the second pic is an IAI (Israeli) Kfir. The US Navy and Marines used these for a few years (as the F-21 Kfir) for dissimilar combat training.

I would like to have taken a picture myself but they were always pretty high up and moving pretty quickly (hence the difficulty in identification). The ones I saw differ from the picture in having some small canard wings.

I joined the Marines around when that program started and these Israeli aircraft were purchased...never saw them my entire time in.

It was cool looking up and seeing some very different looking aircraft. It was almost as cool as seeing a couple B1 bombers flying low and slow over my house en route to an airshow many years ago in Western NY.
