That is true about the hand guards. The only problem I have with them is my bar end mirror. They look too big to mount it to them. The only other thing I am wary about is shipping/duties coming from England. I think it may price things too high.

The UK outlets are a bit pricey and the xchange rates and shipping rates are disadvantageous UNLESS you really want the item are willing to pay for it.

I think bar ends are there to take hits... bar end mirrors are expensive bar ends during a fall. Not something I would put on a dual purpose bike but they do look cool.

QUESTION: Any of your XB bikes have a hard time starting in the cold? Both the SCG and TT need multiple attempts to start. The TT has a hard time holding idle until it is thoroughly warmed up. I think its time for a service visit...

Mine always has. This year is much colder than last year so it has been rougher than usual. The idle seems to jump around on my bike a lot even when warmed up, but I think that is because of the newer ECM/TPS. Through some reading on here I found that the '08 and newer bikes have a lot of changes to the ECM. One of them is the idle is not a set point but is controlled by the 02 sensor, thus a changing idle. It is not uncommon for me to have to restart my TT at least once after the initial start, and once in a while as many as 3 times till it has idled for 5 to 7 minutes.

I got the Bar end mirror because I couldn't hardly see out of the stock ones. I was thinking of getting some after market mirrors that go into the same hole that the OEM uses.

The only thing I really want from that UK site would be the windshield. I think I will end up just getting the handguard extenders from touratech. I think they were only about $25 - $30.

Oh! Nick, How much was it to do the breather/catch can change that you did to your TT?

What's a breather/catch can change? What's that all about?

On my new UlyXT, it had a remarkably hard time starting in the cold. I was still in the break in period and rode it to work a couple of times, only six miles or so away. When I came out at midnight, it was so cold that there was frost on the seat. When I started the bike, it was very difficult to get it to stay running, so I gave it some gas. Turns out that's the exact wrong thing to do. That act apparently jacked up the air/fuel mixture. It ran VERY rough after ten minutes of warm up. It did the same thing the next day and then the next time I ran the bike it would never idle right and did a LONG ride all fouled up. Eventually, I had to have the shop reset the ECM.

My Firebolt never gave me a problem starting in any conditions.

Breather/Catch Can: The first one was about $70 and was a "Pingle" brand. It was well made but too big - designed for dragster bikes like the VRSC Destroyer. I changed it out for an air/oil separator from Lowes (I think it was about $25) but then I had to change the release valve. Admittedly, I was playing around and experimenting. Now I'm thinking about mounting a purpose-build can. They mount up nicely and you don't have to get creative about hanging it off the bike somewhere.

If you're serious about doing this then I would recommend you spend the money on a DRUMMER brand kit or get the pieces from American Sport Bike. The up front investment is higher but worth it because the flat catch-cans mount in front of the oil cooler mount and look good.

The Drummer kit is $160 and the American Sport Bike catch-can is (by itself) is $130. The DRUMMER kit has everything you need except for a filter/breather. The other options require you to have tubing, clamps, breather, etc... which also cost some more $$.

As for the benefits... air box popping was reduced; responsiveness of the motor off-idle improved; and you eliminate the mixture of gas, oil and water CRUD that otherwise gets sucked into your throttle body intake.

There are claims out there about 1-2 HP gains but I have never seen any actual tests. Clean air to the intake is a good thing. Releasing fumes into the atmosphere is not so good. If you don't get the kit, remember to plug the hose inlet holes on the bottom of the airbox plate.

The downside is that the the XBs throw out lots of fumes that you end up breathing/smelling in slow traffic - depending on how you route the outlet hoses...

Actually, my TT does not seem to throw out as much oil as the SCG. I think they are all a little different - particularly between 07-08/09. The newer oiling system of the 08/09 bikes pumps lots of oil on the top ends of the motor (a good thing) but also results in more oil spray being forced out of the breathers (not so good).

Both my 07 and 08 XB models have a hard time starting in the cold.

In the case of the 08 it starts really rich, idles fast for a couple seconds and dies. The next time it lasts a little bit longer and dies. The third time is usually the charm. I have also run the idle up manually and it seemed to stay on with no ill effects.

The 07 starts and dies the first time. It starts and struggles to idle the second or third time. It idles slow at first and then gets better. If I turn up the idle speed screw any more, idle increases but then you get high idle that will not come down when the engine is warmed-up.

It is noteworthy that my old 03 XB started first time, every time; idled fast until warmed up, and ran great except for an occasional air box pop...

ALSO... check out the touring windshields on the ZERO GRAVITY site. I put one on my bike and I am very satisfied. Good air flow - hits my helmet instead of my chest/neck area.

I guess my question is more to why I'd need to modify the breather/catch can. I've never heard anything about that before.

You don't have to...

However, the bike seems to run better without sucking in hot air/oil, and unburnt gas. The main reason this stuff is blown back into the airbox is to meet emission standards. High performance applications (like in racing) never allow anything but fresh air to go into the airbox...

Check out the tech sections on BADWEB. There are some extensive discussions about it.

Also another consideration... A breather catch-can would constitute an unauthorized mod on a warranty bike. Since it really doesn'y hurt anything (except emissions) some shops would probably overlook it. Not so sure about T-Bird or other dealers. I can see that if you have a problem that they say is related to the mod, they will charge you fix it...even under warranty. It would be BS but you just never know.

Hmm... I've never really noticed any airbox popping in my 9R. I'll have to keep an eye on it to see if I notice anything.

It has... There is not an XB on earth that does not have a popping air box under certain inconsistent and unpredictable conditions...

Mark Ching was talking about coming out too. I need to get him comfortable first, so probably lots of tooling around the neighborhood for starters. I have an appointment at church at 1100 on Saturday, so I thought we might ride down Second Street for that. That would give him some practice at starting and stopping, traffic, etc. I don't want to overdo it.

Don't make any plans for the last weekend in April. There's a rally in Arizona and I'm thinking of taking Anthony and Angela, too.
