Serious question, which shocks are covered under the recall & why? Is it because the mounts could break, or is it due to the leaking bit? Which ones require the $100 deal? Also the older shocks with the exposed springs, what the hell brand were those? Are they also part of any recall? |

Older shocks with exposed spring were WP and they were the start of the recall as one shock had a front eye failure so they recalled ALL of them. Then the recall Showas started puking their guts out and THEY were recalled. And then a Showa had an eye failure--or did that come before the puking??Oh,well, you get the idea. |

Good questions Dyna. WP=Works Performance? There's also White Power, but they did the old pre-'99 S2/S3/S1 forks right? Recalls were supposedly for rod-end or shock-eye concerns with all the WP and later some Showa shocks (remember the SRP band aid for the Showas?). If you accepted the SRP band aid, you didn't get a new shock. If you objected to the cosmetics of the SRP, you would get a free upgrade to the new Showa. The leaking was not a recall issue, but leaking shocks still under warranty or within one year of their original install would get a free upgrade to the newer version Showa. Outside the one year window, the owner could get an upgrade to the newer Showa for $100. I just spewed all this off the top of my head, might want to check it versus the KV Suspension page. |

Is there an updated WP shock with the exposed spring, or were those the last of their type? The newer ones on the tube frames look like crap, & still leak. Didnt have any leakage with mine, but 2 guys at one of my track days had their shocks blow out & when those things decided to start leaking it wasnt just a little bit, it was a huge mess. |

FMJ, the recall Showas were never recalled again. No bike had it's shock recalled more than once. Shock recall 1: all 1995-1998 WP (White Power) shocks, all of which had exposed springs. Recalled for the shock eye. Swapped for Showa's with hidden springs. Shock recall 2: 1999 M2, '00 all models, hidden spring Showa shock. A couple of shock eye failures in the field and also the shock can fail internally and come apart. They know how to reproduce the failures. Early in the recall process customers got the shock condom (SRP). An SRP'sed shock will get swapped for a new '01 shock if the owner objects to the appearance of the SRP (I did). FYI Blake, Works Performance shocks were used on 1987-1990 models, they were paired with Marazocchi forks. 1991 through 1998 used White Power at both ends. |

There were at least 2 varieties of the White Power shock body, with varieties of straight wound and progressive rate springs. When they were recalled (the 1st recall) they were replaced by the Showa can (the longer one). If that shock fails or leaks an owner is entitled to the new Showa can (the short one requiring a new front mount) for not more than $100. This is my understanding from the various data shared here. |

Dyna, I agree, I miss the white powder coated exposed spring on my rear shock. Unfortunately, there are no OEM updated White Power shocks for Buells. You can purchase a Works Performance or Penske shock with exposed spring made to fit your X1. Ohlin's is even selling a shock for the XB9's. |
