On a recent ride with ETennUly, Orangeulius and others, it started to get colder as the afternoon wore on. I was wearing a full mesh jacket so I had stashed a section of a newspaper in a bag and pulled it out at a hot chocolate stop. It worked quite well to get me home in comfort but I worried about what would have happened if it had rained. It could be a big mess.

When I got home, I came across one of those large padded Tyvec mailing envelopes. It covers me from neck to waist. The padding is trapped air and Tyvec doesn't disintegrate when wet. Viola! I just lay it flat in a bag and keep it there. Takes minimal room a will be there as needed.

Sounds like a grand idea,but...you may be coming dangerously close to becoming a 'ratbiker'.
Check out the 'Tips' section of www.ratbike.org for similar ideas such as waterproofing your leathers with bacon fat after your morning fry-up breakfast!

Only pulling your leg, maybe you could make a waistcoat out of bubblewrap,I reckon it'd keep your back warm as well and protect you in a tumble too.

I carry a very compact full rain suit with me on all my multiday rides. I wore it over my leathers on my last trip to WV, as in the morning it was in the 30's. My leathers are cold riding in the low 50's, but with that rain gear over it I was comfortable in the low 40's. (yeah, the 30's were still cold)
Now with my heated vest, even 30's should be fine.

Try one of these:

They are compact, compressible, waterproof, and easy to fit. You can add multiple bags for added insulation.

My father was a road racer (bicycle) back in the day, and a big proponent of the newspaper undergarment.

Oh man, I'm falling off my chair!

You guys have a point that stuff should be water proof.

This is what I've been using, it's kept me warm down to 20°f. www.widder.com
