Bike ran great. Filled up 30mi later no power and would hardly run. Let it sit and it would run for a while no problem hit the throttle hard and it died again. Fuel pressure 50psi, o2 code. Replaced o2 which was white, really lean. No better. I took it to the dealer 4 weeks later Intake gaskets changed, TPS, cam sensor, ECM all replaced plus the tps was reset and the ECM remapped. Still the bike does not run. What's worse is before i took it to the dealer it ran for 20 to 30 mi now it will fire and die. if you unplug the tps it will run but not drivable. If you plug the tps in after the bike is running with it unplugged it will die. It has spark right till it quits. fuel pressure never drops below 50psi. Fuel tank was disassembled and cleaned also. The dealer gave up on it and i'm lost. Help!!! |

Sounds like a fuel tank vent problem. Replace the tank vent valve. |

Hey if it is a vent problem just loosen the cap or remove it and run the bike that will tell you if it is vent problems |

Not a vent problem. Thanks. Also does anyone have the install instructions for the race ecm for this bike? The dealer removed a wire from bike that was put in when they installed the race ecm seven years ago. He claims he put it back but didn't. Where the vss plugs into the main harness theres a gray wire 12v b+. I don't know if this is why it doesn't run at all as it did where i took ii to the dealer. |

There's a picture of the ECM wiring diagram for an X1 here. The X1 and S3 share identical EFI components. Do you have the service manual for your bike? My 03 XB9R is close enough to your bike wrt the EFI wiring, I can say that the gray wire does connect to the VSS at its connector and there should be 3 wires total. The gray wire is switched +12 VDC coming from the ignition relay and it also supplies power to the coil, fuel pump, injectors & ECM. I would certainly break out a multimeter and carefully check for continuity and discontinuity at each of the gray wire terminations on those components. It would be a good idea to test the ignition relay if it is still the original one because the vehicle operation depends on its condition. Regarding race ECM installation on a XB9R, all I did was remove the stock ECM and install the race ECM. The bike ran well enough to get to the dealer where they adjusted the TPS zero calibration. An X1 should be no different. As far as I know, no wires need be cut. The '99s, first year with EFI, were notorious for initially having quality control problems with things like main harness miswires, wire breakages, bad crimping in connectors, etc. Perhaps your dealer made some kind of "fix" for an unrelated wiring problem at the time you were having the race ECM installed? |

Kevin When I installed the race ECM on my 99 S3 I don't remember being any wire added. How many miles on the bike? Joe |

At my vss harness i have R/W 5volt reference, Black signal ground, and a white. three wires plug into the vss but there is a gray wire that does have 12v, you can see there was something taped to it. I'm just grasping at straws here. Like i said when i took to the dealer it did run, but they couln't fix it and now it doesn't run at all. Just fire and die. This wire i thought may have something to do with it. Is there some way to bypass the bank angle sensor? |

Up date! Got the bike to run by spraying carb cleaner in the intake. Definitely a fuel problem. 50psi fuel pressure, cleaned injectors, injector pulse with is a little short. Ohm's checked the head temp sensor checked ok but if you unhook it it will run for a few minutes. Maybe sensor is bad although it checks ok. |

There must be more to the story about the gray wire with +12 VDC. Is this wire in the main wire harness? Does it have a contact or is it cut and stowed? Is there another gray wire nearby buried in the main harness that it should be attached to? There are 2 wires to each injector, a signal wire and a gray wire. If possible can you verify switched +12 VDC at the gray wire at the injectors? Any error codes lately? Unhooking the ET sensor should throw one. |

The gray wire is right in the pig tail that runs off the main harness for the vss. It has a terminal on it just like what you would find in the vss or cmp. It has 12v on it with the key on. The funny thing is that it's right out in the open. i know that there was a wire plugged into it and it headed for the pcm, best that i can remember. I've got codes 11, 15, 33, 44 but i think that there just because i've had all those sensors unplugged at one time or another. this all started with the check engine flashing once in awhile. Checked had a code 13 O2 was white as a ghost. Replaced sensor. Dealer told me there were no codes. 15k miles on the clock (Message edited by Numb_Nutz on August 26, 2007) |

Thanks for the update. I would be checking for switched +12 VDC at the proper pins of the coil, fuel pump, injectors, data port connector & ECM. If all is well and good at this point, repeat with the wiggle test for each component. If you've never checked the various ground points before, now would be a good time just to know they are secure. Is the sidestand switch working or is it bypassed? |

I checked everything power and ground related. I haven't checked the side stand switch but i assumed it didn't come in to play unless the sidestand was up. Also i read somewhere on bad web about the diodes in the relay box going bad causing this type of problem. Crazy thing is it acts like not getting the right amount of fuel. Feed carb cleaner in the intake and it runs, but i have 49 to 50 psi fuel pressure, pump motor is drawing 3.5 amps the only thing i don't know is if the volume is correct. manual says 70Lph that would make about little better than a liter a minute.and if it was quite in spec would it cause this problem? Injector pulse seems a little short to me but i'm comparing it to what i see on cars. Low fuel pressure normally means long injector pulse. I find out more tomorrow. thanks for all your input Darryl. Nice to have someone to bounce stuff off of now and then.. |
