I've been subscribed to Sport Rider and Cycle World this year. I think Sport Rider is good, but it seems to mainly focus on the main four SS bikes, with little outside the box. I like Cycle World because it is more diverse accross the board, looking at bikes from dirt, street, etc. I'm thinking about keeping subscribed to CW, but maybe dropping SR. What do you guys read? |

Roadracer X. They cover all the MOTOGP, Worldsuper bike and AMA races with lots of articles by the racers. |

Roadracing World Also use their website as a racing news resource: http://www.roadracingworld.com I don't put my money into other subscriptions. If something is in an issue of one of the mags, I'll buy it over the counter. Today's news for example:

CW is the only domestic and I read the free ones at B&N when we're there. The Europeans have us pinned when it comes to motorcycle pubs. |

"The Europeans have us pinned when it comes to motorcycle pubs." Yeah... they do. Magazines are a just a reflection of the people that buy them. Just look around at the people that ride motorcycles in the US. It's obvious why the Europeans magazines are so much better. I don't just mean English magazines, either. My girlfriend does a lot of international travel and she picks up moto-mags from around the world for me. The English, French, German, Italian, and even the Aussie (not Europe, I know) mags have a lot more of what I want to see than any US magazine. The last decent US moto-mag was Cycle magazine during the Cook Neilson/Gordon Jennings/Phil Schilling era. During the golden years, Cycle was as thick as a Playboy and more tittilating to boot. Ziff-Davis Publishing knew how to cater to a select group of rabid enthusiasts. Once they sold Cycle to Hachette-Fillipachi, it lost focus and withered away. |

I have read CycleWorld for years, and it is the only rag that I keep subscribing to. I have tried Rider, Motorcycle Consumer News, Sport Rider, and Motorcyclist and didn't enjoy the writing as much as CW. I also read Motorcycle.com, Motorcycle-USA.com, and MotorcycleDaily.com. I really enjoy all three of the online mags, but Motorcycle.com has just changed their format and is a little noisy. |

"Cycle World; mainly for Kevin Cameron's contributions. Oh how I long for the days of Cycle Magazine." I just got Kevin Cameron's new book, TDC. It's a compilation of TDC columns and assorted articles. I actually still have all my old Cycle magazines and really only bought the book because it was autographed. It was worth it. |

Am I the only looooser that reads RoadRunner? NO! GREAT MAG! I read it too! I used to get sport rider, but decided I cared more about riding than the stats of the new Jap replica-racer. The one I got earlier this week had a blip about the new Buell! |

"Did you meet Guru Cameron?" I ordered the autographed copy from the CycleWorld website. I sure wish I could meet Kevin Cameron - I feel like I've known him for almost 30 years. I was also a huge Ed Hertfelder fan from the Cycle magazine days. I was racing enduros in the 70's just as his column "The Duct Tapes" was getting published in the magazine. What a nut that guy was - the ying to Cameron's yang. Everything he wrote about, the concession stand fried egg sandwiches, the gas cans you painted in day-glo colors so you could spot them at the gas stops, being stuck to the sheets in the morning because the bandages bled through, being so tired you couldn't even sneeze... was all so true. |

The Europeans have us pinned when it comes to motorcycle pubs. Problem is that the US interest seems to be more Oval track (like ASSCAR), drag racing and street stunting. Those magazines do sell well. Just look at the "ghetto themed" rags at the news stands. We're a different market than Europe. Publications like RRW and Roadracer X and other LEGIT performance motorcycling magazines have really small readerships here. Can't expect the publishers to aim a magazine at a demographic that doesn't exist. Just go to the motorcycle show and watch for the big crowds. You'll find they're all watching the illegal urban stunters videos. (excccuuuuuuuse me, I should have said: "stuntaz") (Message edited by slaughter on August 23, 2007) |
