Okay,

I called Buell Customer Service this morning. Requested help with my pinging issue. I was on hold a long time, but spoke with cordial folks when I finally got through the queue.

Eventually was allowed to speak with the gentleman recommended by Murrae. Very helpful.

Then I looked up the # to call the local dealer to set up an appointment for the BAS recall as well as the static timing check re the pinging. Some of you may recall when I was in for the sidestand recall I asked to have the static timing checked and was told "it's set by the factory and controlled by the computer, nothing we can do".

Anyway, Buell's CS rep said he is going to "get involved" and they will do what they can.

Honestly I hope they determine that it is the timing.

Stay tuned. We shall see where this leads.

XBimmer - are you listening?

Regards,

Okay, just heard from the Dealer.

They said they checked the static timing and everything is set to spec.

He said they rode it, got it warm and "lugged it" like I told them too (I told them it would ping when warm under load such as when doing roll on acceleration at 3500 rpm - if that's "lugging it" then I am guilty of lugging the engine). I note that 3500 rpm was a range that was not allowed during my break-in per the factory manual.

He says they can't get it to ping. The only thing he hears is "injector noise" and "pulsing" from the fuel pump.

Curiously the noise I hear disappears as soon as I go to Wide Open Throttle (WOT). I don't know why "injector noise" would do that.

Whatever. I'm going to pick up my bike - my 2 year warranty ends next month - and I'm going to ride it because Buell says it's fine.

I think it pings because it makes a noise that sounds like the shaking of a can of spray paint when warm during roll on acceleration at 3500 rpm.

If Buell is right it should have a long and happy engine life.

If I'm right the bike will fail prematurely.

Not sure what my next step is. Perhaps an aftermarket FF modification device?

I did not want to go that route...
