I have a 99 X-1 that i cannot start. The starter cranks and the lights and signals work ,but the I am getting no spark. I have the Techno Research software and cable from American Sport Bike and I am getting no connection to the ECM. I have the Keyspan adapter for my lap top. It connects just fine to my 2004 XB9S Low just not to my 1999 X-1. Where to begin? Is the ECM bad? By the way I swapped ignition coils and I get no spark on either. I say again "Is the ECM BAD?" The local Buffalo/Niagara Falls dealership is clueless.

I have 10.5 VDC on connector B (gray wire) but nothing on A or C when I am trying to start the bike.

Ok heres an update. Im getting trouble codes 15, 33 and 44 by shorting out the data port. Still no connection to my laptop via direct link. I do not see the intake temp sensor, the fuel pump and the bank angle sensor going simultaniously. Seeing as to the bike ran fine before the winter and now that I have had a chance to work on it 3 things went bad. My gut is telling me that I am in need of a new ECM. Is it time to bite the bullet and get a race ECM?

have you checked all your fuses? Unplug each of those sensors and try starting it, maybe one has shorted out and its pulling the ecm down with it.

if the BA sensor has failed, that may be killing your coil via the ecm.

Turns out that my VDST software was locked into the ecm from my xb9. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software and I now get a connection to the ECM. I cleared out the trouble codes and I am still getting no spark. Could the cam position sensor or timing be causing my no spark scenerio as in the Cam Sync Failure listed in the service manual? How is a Cam sync failure rectified?

If you rotate the rear wheel in gear, when the crank hits the right position, it triggers the fuel pump to crank up. One of the ECM pins goes high as well. If you hear that fuel pump crank up, you know the camp position sensor is not bad... if it does not happen, you still don't know why...

So that may be a *little* bit of help.

So why is it that when the bank angle sensor goes bad it doesnt flash a code? Pulled the BAS and the bike fired right up. Thanks to all for the help.
