Rio de Janeiro, capital of the homonymous state, is the second largest city in Brazil located in the Southeast. Brazilian city better known abroad, major route of international tourism in Brazil and leading tourist destination in Latin America and throughout the Southern Hemisphere the state capital acts as a "mirror" or "portrait" national, either positively or negatively. It is a major economic centers, cultural and financial aspects of the country, is known internationally for various cultural icons and landscapes such as the Sugarloaf, the Christ the Redeemer statue (one of the winners of the election of the informal New seven wonders of the world), the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema and Barra da Tijuca (among others), the Maracanã Stadium, the Olympic Stadium João Havelange, the Tijuca forest, Quinta da Boa Vista, the island of Paqueta Copacabana New Year's Eve and Carnival. Represents the second largest GDP in the country (and the 30th largest in the world, estimated at about 140 billion reais (IBGE/2007), and is the headquarters of two major Brazilian companies - Petrobras and Valley, and major oil companies and telephony in Brazil, and the largest conglomerate of media and communications companies in Latin America, the Globo Organizations. Seen by many universities and institutes, is the second largest center of research and development in Brazil, accounting for 17% of national scientific production - according to 2005 data. Rio de Janeiro is considered a beta world city - the 2008 inventory of the University of Loughborough (GaWC). It was the capital of colonial Brazil from 1763, the capital of the Portuguese Empire in the time of the invasion of Napoleon, the capital of the Empire of Brazil, capital of the republic until the inauguration of Brasilia in the 1960s. It is also known as the Marvelous City, and the one who is born is called carioca. Demography Population Growth The population of Rio de Janeiro according to the IBGE is 6,323,037 inhabitants in the city and 11,711,233 in the metropolitan area (2010), making it the second largest city of Brazil, third of South America and 24 of the world.
