Ok my 2007 XB12Ss has 1300 miles on it and is in need of its 1k service interval. I decided to do it myself, first step is Oil filter change: 1. Your gonna need some things
Your gonna need an oil filter, 3 quarts of 20x50 synthetic oil , a wrench, your buell tool bag, funnel & catch pan 2. drain your oil
Do this by removing the oil plug underneath the swing arm and be sure to have your funnel ready to catch it. Now the manual says to do this when the bike is nice and warm, don't know why, but I did. 3. Oil is drained
Be sure to have an old rag handy to clean up any messes. 4. Remove Chin fairing.
Be sure to get all the bolts
5. Identify oil filter and remove by any means.
I never really liked Oil filter wrenchs, I prefer the old hammer and screw driver trick!. 6. clean up your mess
7. Prepare the new oil filter
You do this by filling it half full with oil and lubricating the oring with oil, some people say its best to use old motor oil to lubricate the oring but I always use new. 8. Install Oil filter
this is done simply by screwing it on hand tight. 9. replace oil plug
remember that swing arm is aluminum so don't over torque it! 9. fill up your oil tank
My manual said to add 2.5 quarts of oil including what I already put in the filter. 10. start your engine!
do this and check to make sure that your oil light goes off after a few seconds, mine did. Also check to make sure the oil drain plug isn't leaking, nor the filter or any other fittings. 11. put chin fairing back on.
12. don't forget your dipstick
13. Ride your bike to the quarter car wash because my bike is DIRTY!, also I needed to get off all the oil I spilled on the muffler! 14. Check Oil level when the oil is warm.
This is border line on the low side I'm gonna add a little bit of oil. 15. double check!
I added about another 1/4 quart and it brought it up to halfway, that looks good. 16. Check all your screws and everything after you had ridden it for a while just to make sure. Also besure to add loctite like the manual says !! Well this was my first time changing the oil on my bike, I hope I did everything right, any pointers for next time? Tomorrow I'm going to check the primary fluid and brake fluid, I'll post pictures for those as well!. Next weekend I plan on replacing my tranny fluid, I just have to figure out what to put in it!. There is a big discussion about what type to use, I just have to find the right kind for my Helical cut gears which are different from previous buell Models, I might just have to goto the harley dealer ship and get what they use. Also I have to figure out a way to get my TPS reset, I am considering putting down the 200 dollars and do it myself so I can always have it for TPS, and diagnostics. Instead of spending 70 dollars at the dealer and have them do it. Anyway, I hope this helps anyone who is considering doing the work themselves!! |

Drfudd: Your examples are very good !!! Always change the oil engine or transmission after a good ride(as in "HOT") ... ie: oil filter - always put as much oil in oil filter as possible ... In BUELLing LaFayette |

I have used, Formula+, Syn3, Amsoil, and Mobil 1 V twin in the primary and I have to say after experimenting with all of them, Mobil 1 is the best, in my opinion. Super smooth shifting and clutch action, no slippage at all. Amsoil was very good as well, but I really feel that the Mobil 1 makes everything noticeably smoother...really. |
