After searching through the archives the last two hours I have gotten pretty much all the info I need except a couple things.

For those who have the Dual Star heated grip kit;

I was checking out their site and it says the hi/lo resistor has been eliminated. This has peaked my interest because on an S there is only a couple places to put a resistor and none of them are pretty.

It also says that it does not require a battery in the system. This would be another huge bonus.

This has also created a question.

Does that mean that instead of doing the battery/relay setup that you can just directly tap into .. say the ignition circuit? I reckon it has enough power and it's switched to boot.

Also does the throttle side element go between the grip & barrel or directly over the bar underneath the barrel?

I read in one thread that the some one was using the Kimpex element under the barrel and it worked well.

The 12S is a pretty minimalistic bike so I'm looking for the most minimalistic approach.

Polly heaters look nice but I have barends that insert too far into the bars. I also don't know if they require a hi/lo resistor or not. These things were never mentioned in any of the threads.

That's the main thing. I can do the battery/relay thing if I must,.. but that damn resistor in the other kits I've seen is a thorn in my paw.

I'm in the market for heated grips also, could you let me know what threads you found useful?
Many thanks in advance.

I can't remember the names of the threads. There were far too many.
You have to use the search feature and type in "heated grips" then start digging through it all.

It takes a while but is worth it.

With Dual Stars the throttle side element goes between the grip and the barrel. They will make your grips slightly larger in diameter, not enough to bother me but I have a friend who won't use them because of that.

No resister needed on the polly heater, it uses a second feed wire like the dual stars do.

I don't know how much extra capacity is built into your ignition wires, grip heaters can draw up to about40 watts so I keep mine on a relay.

I put a set of Pollys on my Uly last night and had about an inch and a half of space left at the bar ends, if you can make them work, I think they are a nicer setup.

Thank you that info.

Yeah, I guess the smart thing to do with either is to run a relay. No problem there : )

No resistor on either. That is awesome and is making the poly heaters sound like the way to go.

The more I think about it the more I like the idea of drilling a couple holes in the bars & running the wires through them.

Thanks again, I appreciate it greatly.

OK - also considering heated grips for the XB... have grown to appreciate 'em on my Beemer, especially in a cool climate. I'll probably go with Hot Grips for a couple reasons.

How about using PWM heat control, like Hot Grips' or Heat-Troller? The BMWs have a off/low/high switch for no-fuss control, but infinite heat control could be handy (pardon the pun).

http://www.warmnsafe.com/motorcycle_handgrips.php?

Look for the Buell XB pic within the HotGrips site (controller knob mounted through right side of XB-S instrument nacelle). And check the Heat-Troller mount options, especially the pics of the remote box module mounted above the clutch-side controls.

I was originally going to go with hot grips myself but I didn't like having to have a resistor. The resistor would have to be mounted on the forks or perhaps on the lower triple out in the air stream (those things get hot) and it would look horrible on my Scg. Not to mention the wires that would have to run up the fork leg . It's not easy hiding stuff on this little naked hottie : )

Dual star has a variable controller available as well. They have a dash mount version and one that has the circuit board contained in a case and mounts via velcro.

I imagine it would work with the Polly heaters as well since both systems use a second feed wire. (thanks again S_palmer
for that oh so very important piece of info : ))

For what it's worth I tried using something like the Dual Star and quickly abandoned the idea. The heating element added to much diameter to the throttle making it stick. I have Renthal bars so maybe the tolerances are different then stock.

Here's another question for the experts.
I have just bought the cruise control unit from Throttlemeister and want to put on heated grips. The choice seems to be polly heaters. Is there enough room in the 7/8" bar for the polly's and the shaft of the cruise? Ant one have this set up?

Buy 'em and let me know! I can't see how there would be enough room though.

It is done. Woohoo!
I purchased the Motorcycle version of the Polly Heaters. They supposably run slightly cooler than their snow mobile version.

Very easy install. Since I have the race ecm I was able to use the no longer needed servo circuit to power the relay.

I love how the wires go through the bars. I drilled two 3/8 holes at the bottom of my bars & used the supplied grommets. It's very clean & you would never know I have heated grips unless you looked closely at the stem to see the two barely visible wires coming from under the bars going into the front console.

I guess the switch on the right side of the front housing (opposite the ign switch) might be a give away but that switch could be for anything : )

Well.. now that I have heated grips the weather should be nice & warm for a very long time

Just got done with a test ride & all I can say is Good God!

At first I thought I screwed up because I turned them on and nothing happened. After a couple minutes I started to feel a little warmth & thought "great, these are weak, I bought the wrong ones: : (

After 10 minutes however, I had the strange sensation that I could fry an egg on my grips should the need arise.
When I returned home after the 15 minute ride I pulled off the gloves & put my hands on the grips. They were literally too hot to touch bare handed on the high setting for more than a few seconds.
They freaking rock! thumbsup

These motorcycle heaters run "slightly" cooler than the snow mobile ones (so says Polly Heaters Inc) so I'm curious as to just how hot the snow mobile ones get. It must be insane.

I'm so glad I went with Pollys...
No exposed wires.
Clean look.
Easy install.
Can use what ever grips I like.
They get really hot
Only cost $31 + $5.95 shipping
And..best of all...NO RESISTOR! Yippee!

Yeah I did the Polly heaters too and like 'em. I don't have a shot of my switch setup though
