Howdy! The part number on my DRY Element Race Filter, from Buell not K&N, is 29388-02YB. Unfortunately, if the filter number is like the Race ECM number, then the number on the PART is not the number that you ORDER. The number that you ORDER is the number on the BOX which contains the part.... It sounds goofy, but it is true for the Race ECM. I don't think that Buell markets the K&N for the 2006 models anymore. The new style Race filter is a disposable paper element. EDIT: According to the Buell Web Site, part number 29388-02YB is the correct number for the Buell XB Race Air Filter. Good luck! The K&N part # is BU-9003. MSRP is $56.95. I just looked it up on the K&N website. Hmmmm; I've got almost 17K on my stock filter. I think I should consider replacing it.![](http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/clipart/headscratch.gif) |

So the K&N is being superseded by the Buell dry race filter? Why? I've read on various forums that riders/drivers using K&N's report their oil getting dirtier quicker, possibly as a result of particulates getting past the element and rings. I've probably just stepped into a big pile of it with that statement... How is the dry race factory filter different from the stocker? |

I have K&N's on all my vehicles, they are great! Wash, oil and put it back on, and I have yet to see one worn out. The Buell Race filter is a wash and dry of the same construction as the Screaming Eagle pieces and they just don't last as long. New the Buell and K&N probably flow the same. The oil mist in the air box seems to deteriorate the Buell filter quicker ( The Buell is a Non Oil type ). Trying to use OEM stuff as a rule I tried the Buell on my 04 Lightning and it got tossed soon after for a K&N. The K&N went into the ULY at the 1K service. The oil mist in the air box is a non issue to the K&N. |

Xbimmer, I am wondering too. Was going with the K&N until I read some previous posts in the XB board about quality issues with K&N and studies showing it does allow more dust through. I really think for the most part the Buell engineers are on their A game and their is a reason the race filter is made the way it is. I wish Court or anonymous could share the reasoning with us. |

You can wash and reuse your stock Buell paper media filter. It is only disposable if you throw it away. Set in warm soapy water and then after awhile just rinse it out from the inside out so that the particles leave the same direction they entered. DO NOT use compressed air to dry it out or you will certainly turn it into a disposable filter. Just set out in the sun and let dry naturally. Good as new. I been doing this for years but also read to do this in a motorcycle mag. This has been discussed here before. Filters get wet every time you ride in the rain and the intake air just eventually drys it back out. Clean it before you throw it out and ask yourself if it looks pretty darn good after reverse rinsing it. |

Like Electra says, you can wash it. After turning 20K and my local dealer not stocking the filter, I washed the paper filter just like he said. It wasn't drying as fast as I wanted so Mrs. Greg made a "manifold" for me and we speed-dried it with a hair dryer! Works great! |

Doc, Glad you saved yourself some scratch. You can ride quite a ways with your savings. Those expensive stock filters aren't made out of tissue paper, they're pretty tough and I trust them more than K&N filters. (Message edited by electraglider_1997 on October 23, 2006) |
