haven't been around much but now that you are home and you have an "EPIC" 25 day story to tell, think I will hang for a bit and check out some great pix's and enjoyable reading.

Thanks for letting me tag along in spirit my friend, I enjoyed all the calls and the CD was freaking awesome! Shel is still wanting to know when she should be in Williamsburg! : )

arrghh! Denise mentioned my "women" vs. "woman" typo, which i vehemently denied making (i AM Ferris Bueller, after all...), which she then delighted in bringing up the thread and pointing out my error, which i then discovered it was too late to edit the post and fix the derned thing.

however, let it be known that i meant good WOMAN!!! : )

(and as far as pix, well, you'll have to take this up with Denise, but it sure sounds like good, clean fun to me...)

all this coolness (including tax and an icy cold six-pack of Corona) cost a measly $32.

Wow, that really is a cool looking place to stay, and as always great pics !!

you going to the American Sport Bike BBQ?

that's gonna be a tough one. my finances are in a serious hurt from the trip, and we make an extra 15% for working on the weekends, money that's tough to leave on the table, so to speak. i'll talk it over with Denise, but it's doubtful we can pull this one off. fingers crossed...

...and as always great pics !!

thx CJ. : )

the ride became more and more work the further east we got. we finally had ENOUGH of the traffic on I-40 in Arkansas, and discovered an entertaining secondary road (Hwy 70) that parallels the interstate from Little Rock to Memphis and beyond. we couldn't make quite the time as on the freeway, but we didn't care, and to get away from the shoulder-to-shoulder madness in I-40 was a blessing.

Tennessee came and went with nary a photo, which meant we were needing to cover ground. the rain (Ernesto) finally found us in Nashville, but just as we were gonna call it a day anyway.

the pic above must be somewhere in eastern Tennessee or NW North Carolina. the rain was beginning again (look at the dry "shadow" underneath Gentleman Jim's bike), and he needed to slip into his raingear. stopping on a busy freeway gives me the willies, but at least we had a bridge abutment to hide behind.

getting thru Asheville, NC - right at rush hour on Friday afternoon going into Labor Day weekend - sucked so incredibly that words don't do our suffering justice.

here in Cali one simply lane splits on a motorcycle when the traffic stacks up. i finally couldn't stand not moving any longer, and took the initiative to ride down the shoulder into Asheville. risky in terms of a citation, i guess, but i was willing to chance a ticket, just for the blessed relief of actually MOVING.

Asheville was NOT designed to move traffic around, as we spent the next several hours trying to find a "shortcut" around the city, to no avail. it took FOREVER to put Asheville in our mirrors. at one point we even contemplated jumping up on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but since we were headed to Columbia, SC, the Parkway made no sense.

i told Jim, in all seriousness, that the time we spent mucking our way thru Asheville is the most miserable time i've spent on a scooter in many, many years.

the pix are a little out of order here, so bear with me. the reason we were headed first to Columbia was to spend Labor Day weekend with my son Wade, aka FB2 and Spreadem here on BADWEB, who is an MP at Fort Jackson in Columbia. that's Wade on the left.

in this pic we've just gotten back from fetching Oldog up at Two Notch, and have just gotten back to the base in time to witness the daily lowering of Old Glory, something which was very important to Wade that we see, something he takes very seriously, and something which made me proud to be the dad of such a patriotic son.

in the pic one of Wade's MP co-workers has blocked off the street in front of the base HQ with his patrol car, and there's another MP and car blocking off the other end of the street. they take this seriously, and we were all proud to witness this ceremony.

thank you Wade for how hard you worked to get us back on base in time.

the pix aren't very good, but i hope you can use your imagination to fill in the blanks.

at the base of the flag pole are a group of perhaps a dozen soldiers, ready to catch the flag as it is lowered, who then carefully and ceremoniouly folded the flag and marched it inside the the base HQ. cool stuff, of which we were lucky to be a part.

one of Wade's co-workers (Sgt. Dawdy and his wife Kelly) put on a great BBQ one night, to which we were invited, and here we're getting on with the task of catching a buzz. l to r: Sgt Dawdy, Gentleman Jim, Wade and me. (note the bottle of Baileys in my hand - thx Wade!)

well, what should one do when suitably juiced? grab Sgt. Dawdy's Gixxer and tear up and down the street on it wearing nothing but shorts and a t-shirt! (i am a strained professional - do NOT try this at home!!!)

however, if you're gonna drink alcohol and perform stupid pet tricks, it helps to be partying with cops! the majority of people in this photo are military police, which equated to a half dozen "Get Out Of Jail Free" cards. party on, Garth! (note that Wade and Gentleman Jim have "assumed the position" - they must have been feeling particularly guilty...)

well, we finally ran out of booze (in spite of the fact that Wade had invested in five ice chests' worth for the party, and i'm talkin' high-quality stuff, not a Bud Light, Miller Light or Coors Light in the bunch), so's we all moseyed into old downtown Columbia and found a rockin' bar that suited our state of bleary-eyed blissfulness. (yes, we had a designated driver or two at our disposal.)

in this pic Mrs. Sgt. Kelly Dawdy is feeling no pain, and partying with the Alien Twins (see post below for explanation). Kelly more than held her own in the "gettin' down" department, and, i suspect, can drink most men she meets squarely under the proverbial table. party on, Wayne!

here's our big, happy family, having an absolutely grand time. this was the first time i'd ever "partied" with my son (who stated at least a dozen times that evening, "Dad, I think I'm inebriated!"), which was most cool. we all had a blast, and despite the brain cells we damaged that night, we did have sober people behind our respective wheels, as there's no excuse for not partying responsibly.

to the good people of Fort Jackson, especially my son Wade and all his comrades and co-workers: thanks for your warm friendship and hospitality, and for making us "outsiders" feel so welcome in your 'hood. : )

ps to Oldog: thanks for letting me borrow your pix!!!

I haven't laughed this hard for a while. To be exact, since the acceptance of useable fur.

well, my friend, you beat me to the captions, but yes, the Alien Twins did, in fact, accompany me on this trip, and managed to show up in some pretty interesting places. (and if you think YOU'RE laughing hard, take a look at the look on Mrs. Sgt. Kelly Dawdy's face and tell me SHE'S not having a roaring good time with the Aliens!)

you may have also spotted the Twins in my right hand in the group pic above. this was the night i called you from "somewhere" in Columbia, the night where i took the cell phone back inside the bar so you could listen to the ruckus and party hearty with us for a couple of minutes.

Jim, you and Shel were along on this trip for every mile. : )

I didn't notice the twins in the group pic. The laughter has started all over again here. See, Alien's can be a lot of fun when they want to be!

Shel want's you to know the room key still doesn't work.
