I'm glad I bought it.

I was doubting at first, it is rougher in finish than posted pics showed, and mounted to the bike the differences in shape compared with the left are evident. The rear bolt tab is VERY fragile, it cracked with almost no pressure while bolting it up, to ease up on it I slipped a washer between the tab and the frame tab. It is fixable though and I can strengthen it also, and I intend to isolate the scoop from the frame tabs with rubber.

Today I drove to work but about midday I shot back home to get the Uly. Traffic was heavy returning to work (all freeway, 16 miles) so about all I could do was 70-75 mph. Fan never came on. I actually thought that since the bearings are rattling the fan finally chose its time to die, but when I shut it down back at work the fan came on as normal!

I figured because the weather has cooled some that it was a factor, maybe so, but it was still pretty warm today and I have NEVER exited the freeway and not had the fan running.

Left work to head for my dealer since my tall shield finally arrived and I wanted to buy a '07 seat, I don't know the distance probably closer to 25 miles, more inland and warmer, fan NEVER came on! Granted I took a more leisurely route 55-65 mph but again, in weather like today since I bought the bike that has never occurred.

Decided to repeat a known factor and rode home via the 23 to 101 fwys at the usual 80 +/- mph, had to slow down some on the final approach to my exit since it starts bogging down that time of day, but this was another 15 mile run and the fan never came on. In fact, after I installed my tall shield I took an around-town jaunt and then a mile-long offramp-to-offramp 80 mph blast home, when I shut down the fan never even came on then!

I know Davo's been asking for some numbers and I don't have any way of providing those currently, but IIRC available for VW's in the past were cylinder head temp gauges with external sensors, I might try something like that just to satisfy my own curiosity.

All I know is that if the "no fan on at the fwy exit" test means anything, then the r/s scoop works!

xbimmer,

Thanks for the post. If the fan did not turn on after shut down then you are running less than 338 F. That is very impressive. I suspect that you can put some more spark advance back into the engine now. If you are running that cool in August you should be good to go all year. FYI, I have been pulling arrival temps with VDSTS Pro U.S.A.

That's just it Davo, I haven't gotten around yet to doing your timing fix.

I just got the 5k service done last week, they are aware I paid $85 to have my timing retarded back to spec at another dealer out of state. Since the timing was too advanced from the factory my dealer is considering this a warranty issue but they're dragging their feet on how to compensate me...

I want to leave it as is for now in case they want to "verify" anything... but they ought to hurry up.

The scoop is great and it works.

However, the naysayers will be here shortly to tell you otherwise.

Good job!

You can bet on it, Brucelee. However, the believer numbers (in the scoop) are increasing.

xbimmer,
So your timing is set at or very near the stock location now? Was it pinging before the scoop installation and if so is it pinging now?

The scoop is the same as the one Aeholton and Ftd installed, available from Rob Crins overseas.

Aeholton, hope you don't mind me reposting your pic.

Davo, frankly the last couple of days I've been more focused on trying to get the fan to act "normally"!

Since I try to ride in a fashion to avoid the ping I haven't noticed whether the scoop has improved the condition.

Tomorrow is work-on-the-daughters-cars day but I plan to sneak in an early ride for breakfast, I doubt it will be hot enough at all to test either fan or ping.

I can work on the ping testing this week since I ride most every day to work and it's generally pretty warm when I head home.

I checked into that VDSTS, pretty cool. The Drummer may have to wait a bit... (sorry Kevin!)

I am also very interested in the scoops effect on the ping. Please test after sitting in traffic as well. Thanks!

Cyclonedon - Rob Crins is not a company. He is a fellow BadWebber with some talent. This isn't a business to him...just something he did for himself a few fellow dutchmen. I bought the first one in the US and since then he has been getting a few orders from here. He can be reached by email at r.crins@gmx.net.

I don't want to cause any problems by continually mentioning non-sponsor products. So in the interest of fairness: Al at American Sportbike and Trojan Horse (Badweb sponsors) both have right side scoop offerings, also. However they are either carbon fiber which would require buying the matching left one to match or fiberglass requiring paint.
