Dropped my 01 X-1 and broke the toe lever (worse yet, I dropped it in the GARAGE, after moving it and not noticing that the sidestand got bumped up!!). Anyway, after removing the shift lever to get the broken end of the toe peg out and re-assembly, I now get an oil stain from the shift lever bolt. Plan on replacing the primary gasket. Any one else have this problem? Anything else I should look for? Thanks in advance, Dave.

Dave,
I dropped mine in the rain at low speed, same sort of damage. Is your primary gasket still stock? if so get one of the new metal ones, they fix the leak issue (I had exactly the same leak) easily and cost next to nothing.

You'll also want to replace the seal on the shifter shaft, its another cheap part.

Be prepared for some sticker shock tho, the shifter is an assembly and is in the 120.00 range

Be careful torquing the shifter bolt. had the stock one break before I reached the figure in the FSM (yes I was using a torque wrench). I believe thats 29 ft-lbs, I use about 21 ft-lbs now.

Makesure that you replace the gasket around the shift lever and the oring in the inspection plate.

anyone know what year HD switched to a rubberized metal gasket for the primary cover?

If you have this type of gasket just remove the bolt, shoot in a couple blasts of contact cleaner, follow it up with some air, apply locktite, torque bolt. Should work like a charm. As long as the gasket is metal.
