Can someone please help me out with close-up pictures of the brackets that hold the headlight and flyscreen on the S1. Preferably a good size for detail inspection.

If possible I'd also like dimensions:
- diameter of the clamp part itself (54mm I think?)
- distance from front of fork tube to center of headlight mounting bolt?

Thanks
Henrik

Are you looking to make a set or modify an existing mount? If you are looking for a set, I just took mine off my X-1. They should be the same. Let me know if you are interested and we can work out a deal.

Hi Karl; I'm putting GSXR forks on my SV650, so I'm looking for different headlight brackets as the stock forks are 41mm standard tubes. I should be receiving the new forks sometime this week and will then know exactly what size I'll need. Question is fork diameter as well as how far from the forks the S1 brackets will put the headlight; I'll need to make sure it'll work with the SV headlight and hopefully the dash as well.

If it turns out the S/X1 brackets will fit, I'd certainly like to make a deal.

Thanks
Henrik

Henrik, the S1 brackets are exactly the same dimensions as the X1 brackets, but they are NOT the same.

I have the X1 brackets on my S1W. I 'upgraded' because the S1 brackets are somewhat flimsy in comparison to the X1's. The X1 brackets are indeed stronger, and look better in my opinion.

I do know that the diameter of the clamp on the X-1/S-1 bracket is 54mm. I have mine off so I can't give you any detail as far as other measurements. By the way, I also have the headlight if you are interested in that as well.

Rocket; thanks for the heads up on the bracket difference. I'll try to get a look at both. Can you shoot me a couple of pix of your X1 brackets?

Mikey; no hurry at all. It's a long-ish term project.

Karl; if you can give me an approximate distance from the center of the headlight bolt hole to where the fork tube would go. I'll need to compare that measure to the same bracket on the SV to see if it'll work.

Thanks guys.

Bomber - I may need that for a custom dash mounting bracket ... hint, hint. But if the X1/S1 bracket will work, I'll save my favor asking for dash assistance : D

Besides, the SV by now has so many battle scars, that too much billet bling would seem out of place ;)

You mean the Chevy would have generally rusted away by now leaving only the fasteners - easy to pick out of the rust pile : D

Now ain't that the truth!!!

Henrik, as for the measurements:
the forks are 54mm.
the distance from the headlight bolt location to the center of the tube is just about 3 3/4"
The headlight bucket is 8 1/4" (it sort of flairs out a bit on the sides for the mounting points).

I took some pics but you really can't see anything (I have a crappy camera and need to get a better one some day). Let me know if there is anything else you need.

Hey -- er, um, I think I'm insulted -- lemme check with my people and get back to ya

actually, if I wrestled with my wife, I'd let her win! (women, of course, being tougher than men -- there are reasons they have the babies)

that old ford is REALLY bustin my chops -- even the old standby majik jooce, Kroil, isn't having much of an affect on the fasteners . . . ..

that's the bad news -- the GOOD news is that the Ford, belonging to my much better half, is making it necessary for me to pruchase a hot-wrench! WOO HOO!

good advice, brother -- time tested in the Entropy Lab, over and over and over again . . . I'm gonna pick up one of those little tank set like Sears sells . . . . should keep me off the street for a bit -- isn't that what YOU got no so long ago?

no git-callouses yet -- just much pain . . . . . .

I went ahead and bought the "standard" Victor outfit from the local AOC store. IIRC, the torch/regulator/hose kit (with striker & goggles) plus full-size Oxy & Acetylene tanks and a handful of filler and brazing rods ran about $450.

I went back for the gloves shortly thereafter...

Bomber; I read somewhere that soaking stubborn fasteners and such in Coca Cola for awhile (days - weeks?) really helps loosen things up.

Btw. found a shot of the S1 bracket. You're right Rocket, it's a bit crude:

S1 bracket

Does anyone have a shot of the X1 bracket handy?

From Karl's numbers and the photo, I'm cautiously optimistic that those brackets will work. Big question now is the GSXR for diameter? I should know by Saturday.

Bomber:

AOC is my local welding supply store:

http://www.aocweldingsupply.com/

There's one right around the corner from mi casa. Doesn't look like they go much further north than I-10, though (a sensible thing, if you ask me... )

Amen on the quality thing--I have a long history of buying stuff that's almost up to the tasks I have in mind, then going out and buying the right stuff the second time around!

Henrik's "Coca-Cola" idea is interesting.

How big a hole would it take to submerge the vehicle in question in Coca-Cola?

THang -- yeah, I think you've convinced this cheapa$$ed swede to get some good stuff -- I'll let the I-10 thing slide, though ;-}

Henrik's idea wrt Coke IS a good one -- two data points -- the Mythbusters recently showed that coke is about as good as most prodcuts in doing away with surface rust, and, the hole would have to be approx 7 foot in diameter and near to 20 foot long -- even with Archimedes coming into play, that's a LOT of coke!

o cola, btw

Henrik, et al-

FYI, the X1 brackets are a single piece that mounts the headlight and flyscreen. On the S1 (and M2, if memory serves) there were separate brackets for the headlight mounts (attaches to forks) and the flyscreen mounts (mounts between the headlight and headlight mount brackets mentioned above). It's kind of hard to describe, so I hope everyone understands what I'm trying to say.

If I've confused everyone, the short story is:
X1 part = 1 part does 2 jobs = GOOD
S1 parts = 1 part does one job = not as good

Ahh, Thanks Brankin. That's good to know. Now, I *am* running an S1 flyscreen on the SV650, so I would need find a way to mount it with the new bracket anyway. If the Buell and SV headlights are the same size, that's one less thing to deal with.

I have done a bit of measuring on the SV, and there's 4 1/2" from headlight mounting bolt to the front of the fork tube and possibly a 12mm difference in overall fork tube diameter. It may end up being a tight fit. I'll wait and see when I get the new forks. It should be do-able though.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions guys.

Now I remember why I changed to the X1 brackets. Thanks Brankin.

Yep, that's exactly right. The S1 bikini fairing mounts are flimsy metal brackets that bolt to the headlight mount at the lower end, and the fairing at t'other.

The only difference that will not concern you anyway Henrik, is the X1 fairing is bulged on the opposite side from the S1's as the instruments are the other way around too. This does not affect the actual mounting of either headlamp bracket or fairing mount / position. They will remain the same no matter what mix and match you choose.
