have ya TRIED it, or is that
another "expert" opinion?
I use it a LOT on customer bikes,
to great success.
for higher frequency vibes, 100% silicone caulk works just swell.

Silicone caulk? Isn't that a personal prosthetic device?

Thanks Tramp.
I could not find any Bar Snake product at the MC dealers in Salt Lake City. I will be trying the silicone caulk idea.

My only experience so far has been using a bar snake in my 02 XL Sportster 883R. After upgrading to the 1200 kit I noticed more vibration. I put the Snake in and it definitely helped. Possibly by a 40% reduction in vibration. My buddy comments on how he can see things out of the mirrors compared to his 1200XL. If I needed to put another bar snake in a different bike I wouldn't hesitate. A pain pulling it through the bar though.

Fill the bars with lead pellets for reloading shotgun shells. Don't handle the lead with your bare hands.

Good luck,
Bill

I found these HEAVY duty bar end weights a while back: http://www.manicsalamander.com/index.htm

I haven't bought any, but he includes a "FAQ" with an explanation of the physics of vibration that makes sense to me. According to him, silicone caulk, dinky aluminum bar end weights, etc. are a waste of time. The only way to significantly lessen the vibration is to add MASS to the handlebars, so he designed his bar end weights accordingly.

Lead shot would seem to meet this criteria too, provided you get it packed in well enough to be solid.

of course, the guy supplying the "FAQ" is SELLING the barends, so im sure he gives a very unbiased and glowing account of the effects of foam and/or silicone.
If anyone needs any barends, I have a whole bunch in a box, here, with tiny dings, from my BMW work days, from dropped bikes.
personally, i've always felt that if one wanted barends, they should use "throttlemeister" brand, which include a nice friction cruise control.
google those puppies and kill two boids wit one rock....

well, even air has mass, and I'd not be surprised that a fella tryin to sell ya sumpin would think his product is the best there is, would you?

the amount of mass required varies on the appilcation, natch -- also, the location of the mass would affect the effect (or somthing like that) --

also, simply increasing the rigidity of the bar would cut down the ringing, without necessarily increasing the mass --

Great Stuff WILL cut down low amp, high freak vibes (I know through imperical testing), but would likely not do much for the high amp, low freak vibes found on HD products

as for freaky vibes in general, I'll bow the Road_Thang's expert opinion

No personal experience, but I remember reading about someone combining the silicone caulk/lead shot thing; Mix the two and inject into handle bar. Just a thought.

Newfie, i had a Firebolt and never had vibration issues like this bike, only time this really affects me is on long trips over about an hour. if i keep the bike between 6500-7000 rpms it isnt really an issue. Its just that that rpm range never really fits the posted speed limits in any gear around here. its always too slow in one gear or way to freaking fast in another.

Thank you everyone that gave me some actual helpful information on the product that i was asking about.

tramp.......i don't know what it is about you but for some reason you just plain rub off on me the wrong way, sorry but i just can't help it. I am and have been fully aware of other alternatives to band aid this Vibe problem of mine which is why i only asked about the Snake. Also if i needed someone else to do any speaking for me i would hire someone. go ahead and possibly think i am ungrateful of taking other opinions or ideas thats just fine with me, but i can do and will speak for myself.

Personally I really liked the look/function of the Throttlemeister (I Googled it). However I dont want to add three to four inches to the width of my handlebars (I split lanes a lot here in SoCal). So I am going to try the lead weight in the bar thing first. I would try Great Stuff foam but getting that out if it does not work well enough would suck.

Are they are badwebbers out here with a Firebolt that have tried the lead weights?

I am at least a week to sort this out as my bike is in the back of the truck with a broken drive belt ): Sad thing is I was 100 miles from home and planning on ordering one today anyway...... For what it is worth it broke at 13,000. I love the way it works but hate the way it totally strands you when it goes.

Skyguy, I put just enough "Great stuff" in my bar to leave a 2" gap at the open end. I filled up an inch and a half of that gap with the aforementioned lead shot then capped it with a $9 pair of cheap bar end weights(adjusted until it all fit snuggly). Worked great for me.

If you can find them, I got polished stainless bar end weights (from Chaparral I think) for the same price as the aluminum ones (~$10). They are significantly heavier than the aluminum ones and do seem to work better.
