Ok, I am gonna try to post this again...

My clutch cable let go today....

I have already started to remove the broken one..but cant seem to find the proper trox bit..or know the size...

Are there any gaskets needed?

is it just R&R?

I dont have a service manual yet, and wont until January-ish...

Anything special I need to do, etc, etc..

Thanx all...

Chase

Chasespeed,

It's pretty much R&R.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP: The threaded end of the cable that screws into the primary cover is made of aluminum and is very, very easy to wring off (ask me how I know). It's an O-ring seal and only needs to be very slightly tightened not to leak.

You might want to replace the clutch (derby) cover O-ring while you've got the cover off, but that's about it. You do need to follow the clutch adjustment procedure in the manual. There's a complete S1 shop manual in PDF format in the Knowledge Vault (scroll down near the bottom). I believe the adjustment procedure is the same for all tubers.

I think the torx size for the derby cover is #27.

There is a square section O-ring in there that the book says to replace but I never did. Just don't pinch it when you put it back on.

It's REAL easy to do this job compared to an ironhead sporty!
You only need to remove the derby cover.

OH! and if you can, prop up the bike so it's level or you will have a lapful when you take that off.

ok chase, the one you probably want it a t-27 torx bit.. it removes the derby cover. if your careful and flexable,, thats the only one you have to remove, hopefuly you cable broke nicely and the end didnt get lost in the primary.. in the knowledge vault is a 97 s1 manual

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/Manuals/S1_1996-1997_Service/intro.pdf

you can use it.. it will be the same as the one for you x1.. good luck.. aaomy

Oh one more thing that bit me in the hinder:
The ring is where it seats and it's inside the radius of the screws that hold it on.
If you tighten one side and then tighen the other side, it will be like a lever and REALLY tighten the first screw.
Get them all finger tight and torque them down a bit at a time. I killed two bits trying to get the first screw off before I got the other three off and tried the first one last time only to find that it was bearly tight!
DOH!

Thanx all, it broke at the hand lever, so, hopefully, everytihng shoud be good to go.

I talked to daveS today, and its not an expensive part, 44 bucks... And he can get it to me, but I am waitign to hear if anyone else in the area has it tomorrow.

The darn thing let go at a stoplight, in the rain. cuasght me totally off gaurd, adn needless to say, I set the bike down...at a dead stop. Other than a sore ankle, and hurt pride, and pushing the bike a little more than a mile... all is well....hoipefully will be up and moving tomorrow....

Again, thanx, i will tear it apart tomorrow when the hangovber passes, as I am pretty toasty now..adn not doen yet...no bike, no reason to be sober....

I always was curious what would happen if the clutch cable snapped; sounds like it sucks.
Good luck putting 'er back together.

Chase,
Pay attention to what Nate wrote, but also in reverse... Break torque on each of the derby cover screws, then reseat them lightly, THEN take them all out. If you remove three, you won't get the fourth one out. Many a bueller has had to drill the last one out after buggering it up so bad from trying (and failing) to get it loose.

So that's what happened to my derby cover, always wondered who took a grinder to it.

Thanx for the input all...

I was screwing off today, and found out Drag Specialties, makes a Stainless Braided one, for only a couple bucks more than the Standard Buell part...so, basically, it will match my front brake line.. Not into bling too much myself, but details, they are always good...

So, I am going to order that, and it shoudl be in by the time I get around to working on it next month...I will only be home for a couple weeks...then I am gone till next year....

BTW, i have the part number for teh braided cable if anyone is interested...
