I have seen the posts here about the updated exhaust mount for my 2000 M2. Well I called the dealer and they told me it is in stock but it costs $90. Is that right? What is the point of this update. I have machine shop access so I could make my own if someone could tell me why this update is superior. Any advice would be appreciated.

Chris

The old mount is essentially a piece of flat plate. The new mount has rubber bushings as well as different geometry. My guess is that it was a cya move by Buell to stop our bikes from shredding he exhaust system from excessive vibration. Functionally, there's no real difference between the two, but if you have an aftermarket pipe, it may not fit on one or the other of the mounts. I know my D&D full system won't fit with the old mount.

As Awprior says, the old mount was a flat plate, that had a captive spacer, and then had rubber grommets with "ears" on each end. I realize that is a lousy description, but you probably have that spacer, so you can just go look at it.

Mine would eat through those ears in about 300 miles, leading to metal on metal contact. It was obvious that there was a problem.

If you try to order any of the individual parts of it (I tried to order the bushings), the computer at the dealer will kick you over to the new assembly. I think American Sport Bike has replacement bushings that are stronger, but they also probably don't isolate as well.

The new factory mount is a thick y shaped deal with captive bushings, very well designed and nicely set up. I paid the $90 just to get away from a bad dealer even though at the time it should have been covered by a goodwill (since expired) at that time.

It is a little pricey, but a bargin compared to a busted header stud, take it from me. It is at least a really well made part. Installation takes a little while, you have to relocate the voltage regulator (make sure it gets a really good ground, I ran an extra strap).

I have kept the old style mount on my '97 M2. I simply swapped the stock bolt for grade 8 bolt, applied anti-seize to threads and torqued the thing until the metal to metal clamping action between lug and clevis is a secure friction joint. No play whatsoever. The steel bushing inside had worn down enough to allow the clevis ears of the race muffler hanger to bend and clamp around the lug of the old style support bracket.

Aaron has long offered that the semi flexible mounting approach is inferior to a rigidly secured exhaust tract. I strongly agree. You just have to be careful when tightening everything up. You do not want to leave any joint (header to cyl, collector, front muffler hanger, rear muffler hanger) in a stressed state.

Sickquad,

If you want the updated mount, ask them to call Buell Customer Care to see if they will provide you the new mount under the old good will upgrade campaign. If you get the new mount, you will also need to reposition your voltage regulator. Make sure it gets properly grounded. We saw a few failures of voltage regulators immediately following installation of the new muffler front support bracket/hanger. They apparently failed due to poor grounding.

I've also applied the Aaron Mount Method, including the mount from the head (just at the point where the collector forms) to the engine, that was apparently stock on older tubers (S2s, perhaps?)

the Y2K Ma Duece, which had a ferocious appitite for things exhaust, has not . . . . .well, I don't want to jinx anything . .. . .let's just say that the exhaust industry is down by several millionths of a point (smile) . . . .

Thanks, for all the advice guys. The Buell parts person is a distant friend of the family and gave me the kit. Now that I have it, what is the deal with the voltage regulator. Where do I mount it and is that what the square plate is for in the kit? It should stay up front and away from engine heat I think.

Thanks
Chris

Silly move by me! Trying to replace old header L mount with new Y mount.Bike on rear stand and jack under flat spot of motor(ofcourse not pumped up to support engine)I took out top bolt on old L header bracket and engine dropped putting shock mount out of line.I now can not get shock mount back in line
to place top bolt through new Y bracket and shock mount. Any ideas for a fix would be appreciated.By the way Im not a very good mechanic as you can see. Thanks in advance Shawn
