Performance Mods!: | Tach mod. |
Problems/Miles (Please be specific): | Lost turn signals in the rain for the first 10,000 miles or so..now its fixed. It took five trips to the dealer. Moisture inside the dash lights (I have the tach mod) - still happening. Rear rocker box leaked at 3600, 5200, 12,200 and 16,700. I think the new metal gasket has this problem resolved. Forward rocker box leaked at 6900. Lost stock shock at 3300. Shock was replaced with 01 model..nice gear. Lost the speedo sensor at 8825, 16,075, 18,838, 22,800 and 24,457..and so on, and so on, you gotta be kidding me! Neck bearings pitted at 9939 and had to be replaced. Tach shorted out, coil bad at 12,425...had to be replaced. Cam position sensor needed to be replaced shortly thereafter along with ignition module. Starter and starter solenoid died at 17,643. Replaced on extended warranty. Rear cylinder head gasket failed at 23,105. Rear cylinder base gasket failed at 25,387. Rear cylinder base gasket failed again at 28,553, and again at 35,206 and again and again..still leaking. Rear exhaust pushrod gasket failed at 30,848. Rear cyclinder and pistons replaced at 42K. Stator and transmission replaced at 49,500 under warranty. Rear wheel bearings failed at 52K - not covered under warranty beacause they don't warranty the wheel, just the bearings that destroyed the wheel. The front bearings replaced shortly hereafter because they were going. Clutch adjuster bearing failed at 56K and pulled out of the clutch basket during an MSF refresher course. |
Other Mods/Misc/Customization.: | |
Favorite Rides (Roads and Routes): | Suffolk....Manning road and thereabouts. |
Why I do/don't ride a Buell: | One of a kind...everything about it is unique. I get to ride a lot of bikes out there; CBR900RR, 929, SV650, Duc Monster 900, BMW R1150R, BMW R1150RT, CBR1100XX, Dyna Super Glide (Twin Cam)...etc. Sure would be nice to have more reliability. |
How can Buell improve their motorcycles?: | More quality on the finishing touches...I think they call it refining the product. Overall, the fasteners and mechanicals are of high quality. But, the electrical switches and work lack attention to detail...a lot!! Although I love the new XB9R, please don't change the motor on the M2...that should be your baseline model...well, too late :-( |
Life History/Philosophy: | US Navy...love motorcycles, horses and flying private airplanes. |
Top speed on 2 wheels (mph): | 140ish (about 160 on the clock)...but not on a Buell |
Preferred engine oil (brand/grade): | Use HD products...I change the fluids every 2500 miles (2 months or so) to keep my extended warranty, so I don't think it matters. |
