Performance Mods!: |
air cleaner, larger carb jets, added factory tach, Vance & Hines muffler with a quick attachment mechanism of my own design holding the muffler tube to the frame
|
Problems/Miles (Please be specific): |
Hope there is a lot of space for this: In chronological order:
1)Inner race of the idle adjustment screw bearing pulled free from the outer race (created a secondary problem as the adjustment screw punched a hole in the quad cover)
2)Stator shorted out. Replaced stator & had to replace the battery
3)Starter motor failed taking the recently installed battery with it. Replaced both
4)This is one of my favorites (-: the rivets failed in the connecting pieces that hold the two halves of the clutch "spring plate" (why is this even in there?) together which did a credible job of ripping most of the clutch friction plates to shreds. . . necessitating a clutch replacement
5)Primary chain tensioner exploded (both the plastic AND metal parts) making it necessary to disassemble and clean all of the clutch case and plates before installing new tensioner
5)Inner race of the Main Transmission Bearing separated from the outer race dropping the ball bearings into the crank case causing the transmission to sieze up (fortunately I was going slow at the time!). Had to completely rebuild the transmission
6)Intermittent failure of ignition switch causing the bike to just die at seemingly random intervals (usually on the freeway). Replaced every electrical component on the bike before I figured out that it was the ignition switch. Benefit is that I now really know the M2 electrical system and have a spare coil, ECM, plug wires, ignition sensor, etc.
7)Carburetor failed. Replaced carb and exhaust seals

Other Mods/Misc/Customization.: |
added garage door opener switch to the left handle.
Custom grips covered with large gauge magnet wire (comfortable positive grip and doesn't wear out!)

Favorite Rides (Roads and Routes): |
CA Hwy 1
CA Hwy 280

Why I do/don't ride a Buell: |
I have paid my dues in maintenance hours because I love riding a bike with a carburetor (and acceleration pump!!) and a minimum of "helpful" electronics
|
How can Buell improve their motorcycles?: |
Mostly academic at this point, but after all the hours I have spent working on my M2 the main thing I wished he would have included is a real racing clutch instead of the "flat-spring -held-in-place-by-a-C-clip (in an aluminum hub no less)" concept.
