Problems/Miles (Please be specific): | Bought it with ~35k miles on it. It had an xb9 race map in it (it's a 12, not a 9). My first summer owning it, I low sided it doing around 85 mph, had to replace instrument cluster, windscreen, handlebars, front brake master cylinder and lever, right side footpeg, and seat sub-frame. It now has an unknown number of miles since the new instrument cluster said 13.7k when I hooked it up. I don't remember the number of miles prior to the crash. Approximately 42k. The next summer I owned it I had to replace front fork seals. Later that summer, my ignition fuse blew--after some investigation, it turned out to be a wire shorting out inside the fuel pump. Pulled the fuel pump and soldered in some new wire--good as new. Summer 2010, approximately 45k miles, loss of oil pressure, lots of tapping noises coming from front cylinder. Pulled engine apart. Never found anything wrong with the oiling system. I overhauled the top end while I was at it: new rings, pistons, valves, guides, rockers, and lifters. I messed up one of the o-rings at the top of the pushrod cover at the head, causing a pretty good oil leak. Also, I high sided the bike on my first ride after the rebuild--cold tires, too much throttle and a 60 degree turn. Rear end lost traction, out of instinct I let off the throttle and steered into the skid. The rear end hooked up and threw me, causing no injury (full gear); however, the frame Puck was ripped off and the frame was dented. Out of frustration and lack to time to work on it, the bike sat in my garage for a few years. I finally got around to tearing the heads off to fix the pushrod cover o-ring oil leak (summer 2015). Have most of the bike back together at this point. Waiting on a few parts that broke to finish up. Will also try my hand at filling the frame dent, then cover it with a new Puck (the dent is deep enough that a Puck won't cover it completely). I am getting the itch to buy a Ulysses such that my wife can ride with me. Luggage would also be welcome. Still love the lightning, but isn't as touring friendly. |
