My second problem in almost 35,000 miles.

My RX has been sitting 4 to 6 weeks. I was gonna take it to run some errands this morning, and I noticed after the normal fuel system prime, the pump did not shut off.

I started the engine (wondering if there was enough juice in the battery), it started fine, I let it run till warm and shut it off to get my gear. The fans shut off, but the fuel pump was still running.
I let it run a minute or so, checked the dash, it does show a fuel pump fault, don't recall the number.

The only way to shut the pump off...is to pull the fuse, even with the ignition "off" and the key out..!

It ran well, no problems last time driven.

Stuck relay, pump problem ??

I don't think there is a relay. I believe the pump is PWM driven by the ECU. The ECU regulates the pump speed (PWM)and therefore fuel pressure. What is the fuel pressure? I suspect that maybe is the reported fault. If so, you will need a new ECU.

If I remember correctly (this is going a few years into the memory bank) they had a problem with some of the pumps causing this condition...at key off the pump would continue to run. What you look for is there is a small rubber boot that separates the 4 wires going into the pump. Pull that rubber boot back and see if there is a short present between the wires.

Interesting thought...another freaking fuel pump problem..!
Three Buells, and two with pump problems...what the hell.

After taking the pump out of my XB12s, I could see exactly why the wires were chaffed to the point of shorting...crappy design, workmanship and quality control.

Now I've gotta drain nearly a full tank of gas to look into/fix another pump problem...
If this turns out to be the problem, it ISN'T actually a pump problem, it's another design/quality problem.

I talked to the IDSI guys, they gave me a coupla things to look at.
It appears that the ECM/ECU is "not" the problem.

So that means it's a fuel pump wire harness short somewhere.
The search begins...slowly.
I have other things going on with car cylinder head building stuff. The timing on this stinks !

My bet is on the fuel pump wiring.

I have to agree with crappy design conclusion, this is not acceptable issue.

Find wiring diagram and see which pins from ECM control the fuel pump. Disconnect ECM plug and fuel pump plug and check wires with tester. If the wires in pump circuit are OK connect pump plug to the pump and power the fuel pump manually through the pins from ECM. If it acts weird the issue is inside the pump. If it acts normally the issue is in the ECM.

See my previous post. I completed the check as told by the folks at IDSI (ECM builders).
This check indicates that it's a wire problem.
Just following suit behind a wiring problem that plagued my XB's fuel pump and caused the entire bike to shut down (blown fuse)..!
POOR engineering practices was the cause on the XB. It this one the same..?

Both car stuff and procrastination has not let me get to the RX yet.

Been seriously thinking of selling it, and keep the little XB and my CR.

This one is likely the same because of Buell did not have enough money to spend more time for more reliable design.

I am even not sure if he would put more effort for more reliable design if he would have more money because of this was probably the only way to compete Japanese motorcycles - keep the cost low and release the motorcycles as is.
