nothing too fancy but it seems to do the job nicely. measure down about 2.5 inches from upper base. did this on front, rear and sides, connect the dots for line to cut. I don't remember the length to cut the lower, just be sure there is plenty of material to body to. my guide was to cut lower just enough to allow upper to slide over. used hand file and bench grinder to trim the upper to fit flush with the main body of the tail light on the lower. if you have problems fitting puzzles, ask your kids to help. this part was very tedious. once fit was good, scratched inside of upper for good adhesion. I used a plastic epoxy to join the parts together

Very clever mod, John. Looks almost stock, plate is still plainly visible but not hanging way off the back.

Looks Great! Here's another spot where the bike puts me in a quandary. On one hand I really want to tidy up the rear end but on the other hand, after an unplanned rain ride, I found that the stock location keeps the bike cleaner than any bike I have owned before. Not hardly any road grime thrown up on the my back. It all seems to wind up on the back of the plate and under the stem. I've had other bikes with the huge ungainly rear fenders not perform nearly as well. Three screws and a connector and the whole thing comes off for track days. Every time I consider pulling something off this bike I find I like the way it works as much as I'd like to change the look! Curse you Erik Buell and your obsession with function dictates form!

I just did the same tail chop ... thanks for the idea! Took a lot more grinding on the lower portion to get the top portion to slide over than I thought ....

Looks good. Patience pays off with this. That is why I sat in front of TV when I did it. Went zen and didn't rush it

You guys are making Erik cry. Do you know how much money EBR spent to get that just right! Wind tunnel testing proved it's worth and you go and hacksaw the bastard off!! Shame Shame!

Will it still fit a 1125?

I am sure he is smiling because we love the bike and we are the "this is MY bike" crowd and we will show it. Our own little barn creation

It was a little scary cutting up parts that are not even available as replacement parts yet .

Eric should be proud .. I'm a Kool-Aid Drinker … I've had 3 XB's an 1125 and now an 1190 ….

When I saw this thread it reminded me of a true story. I met the gentleman that owns this:

When he picked up his EBR RS from East Troy he said something to Erik about changing the tail light. Erik explained how much work it was to make it aerodynamic and that changing it would mess up the air flow. The gentleman, hearing all of this, decided to leave it alone.

But hey, it's your bike, you paid for it so you do what you want but seeing your post just reminded me of his story.

That stock tail is ugly, and need to be tidied up a bit!! I would look to see if it could be cleaned up further by modding a tail cleanup kit for another bike. 185 ponies on the street the bike is shaped like a bullet its all good!!

It's your bike and you paid for it. If you want to put apes, forward controls and fringe saddlebags on it, I'll support your decision while snickering inside.
Personally, I like the change in looks, but I doubt I'd take a saw to my brand new $18000 bike. I doubt you'll go fast enough on the street to notice the additional drag.
If you do be sure to wear your aerodynamic chaps. Enjoy!

Boy it looks way better. I'd a made it even another inch and a half shorter stalk.

Why have a stalk at all? Can you not remove it and just bolt it on from the brake light assembly down?

I'm sure with some additional cutting, grinding and ingenuity it could be tucked further. I ride mine to work so would rather have a little something there in case I get caught in the rain. I had a full tail chop of my XB12 and a rooster tail up the back in the rain is not fun.

I don't know, I thought it would create a lot of drag looking at the OEM design but it doesn't all actually. Having the longer stalk makes it easy for me to access the mounts to remove it for track days, and as I said previously its been the best ever in keeping the bike and me clean in the wet. So mine will stay stock.
