5.1 miles from the 'Dome and i came upon what i believe to be a site where Native Americans used to gather.

just upslope from the grinding stone was this small, cool, naturally-shaded glen. note the lush undergrowth, a little uncommon down here at lake level, a result of the unique conditions at this site.

It sure looks nice there Jerry, just what I was hoping to find today. Hoped to ride up outa the cold soup down here. But alas not even close. In the spirit of our last ride I decided to take the KLR as far up Rancheria as far as I could go. What I got was miles and miles of deep snotty mud, fog, rain and finally snow pack. Had to turn around just six miles from Greenhorn Summit. Good thing I couldn't find Sawmill Rd. While I was more than ready to bail the trail, visions of D chasing me down your front steps wacking me with a broom while I shed great gobs of mud everywhere wouldn't have been cute. Had to take the hose to ME when I got home.
What was I thinking? It was kinda fun, but really more of a work out. Your ride looks a lot more fun!

Ubster, my ride had its moments, to be sure, but it sounds like i came home a little cleaner than YOU did! btw, YOU need to get a small digital camera to carry - WE WANT PIX, MAN! btw v.2, i've yet to do Rancheria from end to end. it's on "my list," but it sounds like i should wait for it to dry out a bit before taking it by Strom??? : )

this was shot in the same location as the previous few photos, and is a rare site in these parts, at least at this altitude. i don't think i've ever seen a mushroom growing at lake level, and, again, is made possible only by this unique little ecosystem i stumbled into.

up close and personal, flash. considering that this 'shroom is all of about two inches tall, this was a difficult shot, but i think it turned out great. i had to gently move some blades of grass out of the way to tidy up the composition a bit, and then equally gently "restored" nature's order before i left, leaving the mushroom to do its thing in peace.

one last shot from my little oasis. while i was soaking in the peace and quiet i spied a roadrunner and wanted to capture it on film. about the time i had that thought a bevy of dirtbikes blasted by and sent the roadrunner packing. that's ok, i'll stalk the fast bird some other time. : )

a little further down the lake and another "superstructure" of the Borel Canal rises ominously from the surface.

pre-lake this was a bridge across the canal. given a dry enough season this could, again, function as a bridge across the canal.

hard to tell in the pix, but i put myself in a little bit of a pickle picking this photo location, and had to CAREFULLY muscle the bike back and forth by hand several times to get it turned around without dumping it and me on our heads.

Come on Glenn, give me a little credit. : )
However... I will give you a toothbrush to scrub the driveway if you ever leave donuts.
