Wow indeed. Strange how things happen sometimes. If you remember Jerry you & I had a conversation about Mr Barr when I "just showed up on Christmas Eve". An inspirational man. That's just too cool.

too cool indeed UBster! we didn't get to visit long - me 'n D were just getting ready to leave on the scoots for a prior engagement - but we all promised to stay in touch, and i've got my fingers crossed that Dave and Susan will be dinner guests here at the 'Dome very, very soon. : )

Ferris and JB2,
Cool stuff. I'll have to pick those books up and give them a read.

Alex, call Dave at the phone number listed on his web-site. He's the guy who will answer the phone and he will tell you that he is a one man show from riding the adventure to selling the books. Make sure to have him sign it and tell him JB2 and Jerry sent you! ; )

JB2, my friend and brother, meeting Mr. Barr is one of the highlights of my life. thanks, man!!!!!!!

Yeah well, the thanks is all mine for more reasons than I care to mention but I owed ya. I hope you - n - D and Dave and Susan have a few tales to tell me this fall. He said he road 77 miles yesterday and that it was beautiful out. He also claimed it was an honor to deliver the book and laughed at your look of surprise. : )

Tell me... does it get any better than the brotherhood of riding? I think not.

JB2 - it was indeed beautiful yesterday, made the more so by our surprise visitor and the rich cross-country threads by which he came to rumble up our driveway.

we didn't get to chat long enough - me 'n D were just getting the scoots ready to head into town for an appointment - but i know it won't be long before we have the Barr's over for BBQ and some SERIOUS story telling! i figure Dave will be the one tellin' the stories, and i aim to soak it all in. : )

Alex, i never told you, but i had considered inviting Mr. Barr to the 'Dome last year for the RANE festivities here, but didn't for at least three reasons: 1) altho he lives about 10 minutes from here i'd never met him, and felt a little awkward as i pondered "barging" unannounced into his life and asking a favor. 2) me 'n D were SO busy getting ready for you guys that we finally decided we couldn't take on another task and do it right. and 3) i was, to be honest, intimidated about meeting the man.

this may sound odd, but i think you'll all understand. i had just finished reading "Riding the Edge" and the extreme toughness and resolve of this man, the MONUMENTAL adventures he'd undertaken on his motorcycle, made me nervous that when i finally met him i somehow wouldn't "measure up."

you may, as you read this, be calling "Bulls**t!", but it's the gospel truth.

well, 20 seconds into his visit yesterday he'd already made me feel comfortable and important, and when he left i couldn't help thinking that we'd just met one of the nicest, kindest, warmest, and most sincere people in the world.

in fact, he made ME feel like the celebrity, and i'll never forget it.

i'm truly surprised that in all the years i've lived here that we hadn't run into each other sooner, and it looks like we've got some catching up to do. he wondered aloud yesterday whether me 'n D might be interested in riding with him some time.

i bet y'all know the enthusiastic answer.

JB2, what can i say? "Out of Words" comes to mind. : )

Pdx: cool! : )
Spudman: weird!! : )

------------------------------------------

i worked about a half a day today, then the work ran out. broke my heart, it did.

what to do? Denise, pounding away on her new account, had plenty of work and was gonna make the best of it.

i decided to take the day and do what I do best.

ride.

this time, around the lake. Lake Isabella. or, more accurately, Isabella Lake.

this is, after all, s'posed to be about our hometown, and i've done a poor job of showin' y'all around. so, without further a'dude, here's the first installment of "LOL!" - i.e., a lap of the lake.

and to make it more interesting (for me, if not for you), THIS lap will be via the natural shoreline as much as possible, eschewing (look it up) the pavement as much as reasonable.

Isabella Lake is a beaut, and i absolutely love it here. it's about a 45-mile ride to do a lap the "normal" way, so you'll forgive me if it takes a little bit longer to do it, well, the LONG way.

like...enjoy. : )

just about to fire the bike and get some heat in it -- yeah, it's cold and blowing, but it doesn't get any better.

0.9 miles from the ThunderDome, and my first stream crossing. i wasn't worried about getting across, just sad that the bike would get trashed in the process.

at this point the bike would barely move (despite an impressive rooster tail), and the kickstand was largely superfluous (look it up).

how bad would it suck, i thought, to have to call Denise five minutes into my ride and have her come rescue me in my four-wheel drive?

followed, about 50 yards later, by my THIRD stream crossing.

made worse by the soft sand i'd have to climb out on the other side. in the photo it looks rather tame. in person, i gave THIS crossing a LOT of thought.

Wayne's North Fork Marina (visible in the fourth shot in this series, to the far right of the photo).

the footing was iffy, but for this shot the back tire HAD to be in the lake.

this is the top of the the Borel Canal. it spends most of the year underwater. before there was an Isabella Lake (nearly 50 years ago), the canal fed water from the Kern River in Kernville to the Borel hydroelectric powerhouse, about five miles southwest of the town of Lake Isabella.

the powerhouse is still in operation.

this is the canal looking the other direction. the lake has come up enough that only the very faintest hint of the canal is on display for the discerning eye.
