couldn't take you up to the big trees today - not enough time, and the road is closed for the winter.

several miles above Riverkern.

a cold ride, not very far (about a 50-mile round trip), but felt good to knock the cobwebs off.

thanks Timbo! love your avatar. : )

UberBear, no, the USPS was NOT kind yesterday, but i rode the yellow and black thing ANYWAY. has been three months since it was last ridden on the road, and i couldn't stand it anymore. felt great to spank it again, altho i had to learn how to ride it all over again - D's SV it is most assuredly not.

see you in about two hours. : )

SUNDAY JANUARY 30, 2005:

me n' UniBear hooked up today for a ride, and had a GREAT time of it. no time tonight to add text to the pix, so if you're following along, please be patient.

i WILL say this: i was a skosh behind the curve this morning so didn't take the time to check the ambient air temp, but if i guessed 25 b-r-r-r-grees i don't think i'd be far off...

UberBear, today was a BLAST, thank you. : )

(and thanks, once again, to my sweetie Denise for letting me trash her bike! er, one of these days maybe i'll get my OWN motorcycle...)

UberBear, this is another of the multitude of reasons i was a bit late to our rendezvous. as cold as it was, and as much moisture as there was in the air, the hot springs in Lake Isabella were putting on quite the display.

i HAD to stop and grab a few pix. : )

i've always found the concept of water simply emerging from some crack or crevice in the ground to be fascinating to the point of being mesmerizing. to see HOT water doing the same is quite remarkable.

me 'n UB were up in the air as to where we were riding today. didn't matter, really, as long as we rode. Techachapi had made our short list, as had Red Rock Canyon and Randsburg, but when i finally slipped and skated down the canyon this morning (it was SO cold!) and reached an unusually warm and balmy Bakersfield, we re-pondered our options and decided to stick a little closer to the San Joaquin Valley so's we could soak up some late January warmth and ambience.

this shot is from Round Mountain Road, looking down on Bakersfield's Lake Ming, site of, among other things, drag racing of the boatish kind.

to reach Round Mountain from Bakersfield requires a rollicking romp up China Grade Loop, one of the best local roads that it seems nobody knows about. 'twas a fine way to get some heat in the tires. : )

as much as i ride the local roads, i hadn't ridden THIS road, i.e. the Woody Cut-off, and my expectations weren't all that high. turns out to be a GREAT road! can't believe it took me almost eight years to get around to riding it.

sorry it's so hard to read.

MOUNTAIN HOUSE
One and one-half miles north of this point
stood the site of the Butterfield Stage
Station known as Mountain House. Operating
through present Kern County during 1858-1861
this famous line ran from St. Louis, Missouri
to San Francisco until the outbreak of the Civil War

very cool, and interesting to imagine living in those times.

ps: a pox to all with firearms and nothing more productive to offer society than shooting up cool stuff like this monument. may you all dirty bastards kiss my rosy red .

Woody Cut-off, continued. very pretty and peaceful out here, very little traffic, lots of green and already some wildflowers beginning their springtime show.

i figure in another month these hills will be ALIVE with wildflowers, and the oaks, which look so sad and lifeless right now, should start greening up sometime shortly thereafter.
