at the Bealville crossing, just north of Hwy 58, just south of Caliente. this train is stopped on the siding, waiting for a train we could hear several miles below us at the crossing in Caliente, to catch up, the second train apparently making better time and as such being allowed to "play through."

part of the reason for the difference in performance as these trains inch their way up Tehachapi Pass is the fact that THIS train is carrying a full load of new cars and pickups from the port of Los Angeles or San Francisco to car dealers somewhere back east, and is running mighty heavy as a result.

it took almost ten minutes for the overtaking train to finally emerge around the corner - it's mile after mile of pretty serious uphill for these guys, and often the climb out of the San Joaquin Valley is accomplished at little more than jogging speed.

Denise, bless her heart, is doing her best to get the conductor to rock our world with his air horns. : )

not at all sure why, but the second train pulled up alongside the first one and stopped. this, i believe, is the conductor of the second train, having a confab with conductor #1. behind and above the two trains you can see the small hillside where the previous shots were taken.

What's with the water trough. Did the Zook need a drink? Wouldn't find no 'murican v-twin stoppin' for a sip. Well, maybe a V-Rod.

With your permission, little post-processing.

BTW, love the pix! 'specially that first train shot!

The scenery along Success Valley Drive looked markedly similar today. And me with no camera!

What's with the water trough. Did the Zook need a drink?

ar, ar! : )

nah, was just a neat little spot to stop down and revel in simply being alive. in the 20 minutes or so we were there i believe a total of three vehicles went by, and two of them were motorcycles (one of whom coasted by, engine off, still doing every bit of 40 mph!)

today was REALLY a treat, just to be able to gear up and go, riding thru some of God's own country. we stumbled into the PERFECT Mexican restaurant in Tehachapi. we had lunch in the cantina, where we were serenaded by a particularly entertaining eight-piece mariachi band (the music sounded even better after a four-pack of margaritas...)

anyway, 'twas a sublime way to spend part of the morning and most of the afternoon - makes the long, relentless days at work seem all worthwhile.

ps: thanks for the "post-processing." : )

Just went back to the previous page and I gotta say I particularly like photo #2 from today, looking down at the road, and the "going" s-curve shot. Great composition, both.

However, I gotta ask, considering all your bitching about walking up the street in Tonopah, how the hell did you get up to the top of the hill for the shot down onto the road? Denise carry you up?

yeah, i DID (he says rather sheepishly) bitch a bunch as we hiked the length and breadth of Tonopah (for what? motorcycle magazines? sheesh!) - sorry 'bout that. : )

that said, all the various shots looking DOWN on the Lion's Trail were taken from the roadway ABOVE - no calories were burned in the pursuit of these pix!

Wow, so close etc.
We passed each other. I had my son drive me to Lancaster today. He could use the practice and I wasn't up to driving yet but had stuff to pick up & really wanted out. Fever broke today finally. Friday it was 104. This thing hit me like one of those trains Wednesday night. Spent most of the time today kicking back enjoying the sun & clear skies. But around Caliente & the Loop I eyeballed the trains, hills & side roads and would of loved to have been riding. Thanks for putting pictures to my daydreams Jerry.

wow UberBear, didn't know you were down, sorry to hear, glad you're feeling better! we stopped at the Loop, no trains, continued on towards Tehachapi, saw a train heading west, hung a UE and ripped back to the Loop to see if the train was long enough to go under itself, which it did with a bunch of room to spare.

D had never been on the road between Keene and Tehachapi (parallels 58 on the south side), had no idea it was even there, so it was an extra-special treat heading up there.

hit the LT at a pretty good clip coming home, racing the fading daylight, enjoying the sounds coming out of the SV's can (i am SO impressed with D's scooter - even two-up it's a grinner), and were rewarded with a STUNNING view of Lake Isabella and the Kern River Valley when we crested Lion's Pass above Bodfish.

if all goes well, the NEXT time i do one of these i'll be on my own scooter. speaking of which, what are you doing next Sunday??? : )

Geez, Unibear, I did that 104 deg stuff a few years back and can attest to the fact that it ain't no fun. Glad you're back among the living.

FB - I was all set to be real impressed that you'd climbed that big honkin' hill just for the sake of art. No dice, huh?
