the town of Bodfish is just below, already immersed in shadows. the town of Lake Isabella is still in the light. around the corner to the right is Mountain Mesa, Weldon, Onyx, and beyond. hard left is the lower Kern River Canyon and Bakersfield (my route down the hill about four hours earlier). about mid-pic to the left is Hwy 155 - the Bostrom - heading west toward Alta Sierra and beyond. at the far (north) end of the lake is Kernville, gateway to the Southern Sierra and Giant Sequoia Nat'l Monument.

the pavement running up the right side of the pic is the main drag thru the town of Lake Isabella. the pavement on the left is Hwy 178. Isabella Lake was created in the late 50's by building two earthen dams at the southern end of the Kern River Valley and blocking the run-off from the southern flank of Mount Whitney. in this shot you can see the so-called Auxiliary Dam. just to the left, out of frame, is the Main Dam, and the two are separated by a spear of land called Engineer's Point, visible above. in the distance, to the left, is the burg of Wofford Heights, and with a wee bit longer lens i could show you the ThunderDome from here.

Excellent shots Ferris, thanks! So is the Strom still in lockdown? That's annoying : (

Have you lived with an XB9S Ferris? I love SV's, they are wonderful bikes, and a steal at the price, but having ridden both, the XB is a better SV by *any* measure I can find except out the door price.

Go get a 9sx for the afternoon and repeat that same ride, and report back to us!

thanks Reep. : )

yeah, still in lockdown. the ball is back in their court, now i must hurry up and wait.

no, haven't "lived" with an XB. have ridden three - two 9's (including a CityX last year during Oktoberfast) and a 12 - but only for short distances, not long enough to bond with them at all.

Go get a 9sx for the afternoon and repeat that same ride, and report back to us!

anybody from Buell PR listening??? : )

Damn, I'm gonna have to head down your way again soon! Sure took you enough pictures to finally get around to including the scoot in one! I was beginning to think that these were posted by an imposter. An imposter poster??

for anybody who's been privvy to the saga of my DMV-of-California "quarantined" motorcycle (it's a long story -- remind me to remind Court to remind me to tell the story sometime...), the DMV just called, said i'd been badly misinformed when i bought the bike in Colorado last September, that i'd made a good faith effort to abide by CA DMV rules as they had originally been stated to me, and, as such, they are forthwith releasing the "hold" on the scoot and that my registration, title, and license plate should be arriving in the mail in about a week.

PARTY AT THE THUNDERDOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : )

Holy Crap! Since when did a DMV take that sort of stuff into account? 1 degree here this morning was cold, but I did not realize hell had actually frozen over...

this is California. in Texas everything is bigger. In Cali, everything is weird!

1 degree? how do you do it? we have several windows open in the house this afternoon, and it's supposed to reach 70 on Saturday.

hmmmm, i may have to go riding this weekend (on my OWN motorcycle for a change : ) )

Ferris,

Congrats on getting your scoot to legal status! Looking forward to pics with the flying banana in them. The pics above are awesome, may even inspire me to start my own thread. Thanks again for keeping me virtually in the wind while living in the snow.

Hey, speaking of the flying banana...is the Strom gonna rise from the ashes sporting new threads in a blue-black hue?

Spud, thanks, and you're welcome. can't wait to see some of your pix. you've posted some of the Palouse before, and that area is GORGEOUS! hello to Trix & Co. : )

Dino, have been holding off doing anything on the Thing (save for keeping the Battery Tender plugged in and dumping some Sta-Bil in the gas tank) until i heard whether or not i got to keep the bike.

maybe i should just fog some black primer on it (in keeping with the Rugged Outdoors Adventurer theme) and call it good?

Sunday January 23, 2005:

pretty rare that me 'n D get a day off these days, especially together, but today was an exception and we needed to ride.

the 'Strom still isn't legal (any day now...) so we had to ride two-up on D's SV. gotta tell you, it's a great machine, and handles two peeps on board like nobody's business.

anyway, the tempometer touched at LEAST seventy luxurious degrees here in SoCalifornia today, the hills are alive (wildflower season will pop pretty soon), and the roads beckon in every direction.

we opted to head south, towards Caliente and Tehachapi via the Lion's Trail, one of my favorite roads in the world. we had a GREAT time, and hope you enjoy the pix.

this corner has already been shown on this thread, but i had to shoot it again, from a little different angle, and with much earlier-in-the-day lighting. the Lion's Trail is as gnarly (and fun) and the name implies, and it's cool to be able to look down and several corners ahead like this.

...going.

the LT has three or four 180-plus degree corners like this in a several mile stretch towards the southern portion.

took a 20-minute break in this idyllic little spot. the air temp was PERFECT, and it was quiet and still. the scent of things growing with determined vibrance hung in the silence. this trough (not nearly a cool enough word but i can't think of one better) is naturally fed by a little pipe poked in the ground, and provides a cool drink for countless cattle that free-range these mountains.

no company of the bovine kind today, just the gentle trickle of water and a lush world of green to nourish us. very quite peaceful.
