...but it WAS unforgettable. : )

our travels yesterday afternoon brought us to the quaint, cozy Whispering Pines Lodge in Kernville, California (where Mrs. and Mr. B. Streisand stayed on their honeymoon several years back), where we had a warm cottage waiting, where we watched James Dean in "East of Eden" on the video, and where we brought in the New Year in fine style.

we hadn't done it by motorcycle, but we PRETENDED we had, and sometimes that just has to be good enough. : )

the town of Lake Isabella is in the foreground, Kernville is at the far end of the lake, and the little blip of civilization on the far left is Wofford Heights. if you squint just right you can almost see the ThunderDome.

ok, now we're doing a counterclockwise lap of Isabella Lake. this is from Yankee Canyon (cool road!) looking basically west across the lake towards Wofford Heights.

from the Audubon website: The South Fork Kern River is home to California's largest lowland riparian forest. It is one of four "Flagship Projects" of the California Riparian Habitat Joint Venture. A shared effort between Audubon-California and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has saved 1127 acres of this forest. In May, 1999, 156 acres of land forming the new Kelso Creek Sanctuary of the Kern River Preserve was purchased by Audubon.

The Kern River Preserve, and environs, was one of the first ten sites in the U.S. to receive "Globally Important Bird Area" recognition. 332 bird species have been recorded here. Most significantly, two hundred species nest here including major breeding populations of Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Summer Tanager, and Willow Flycatcher. Audubon-California is engaged in a habitat enhancement program to benefit the Preserve's nesting wetland species including Wood Duck, Mallard, and Cinnamon Teal.

Dino, this is for you. while i was shooting the scene above this little beauty landed and watched. i wanted to get him/her on pixels, but knew he/she wouldn't put up with much intrusion, so as i walked slowly closer i tried to keep my camera pointed the right direction. he/she was plenty nervous, cocking its head this way and that, and assuming the "ready for flight" posture.

Dino, there's SO much shutter lag on my camera that panning a subject is nearly impossible, as the screen goes black JUST when you need it most. this ain't a great shot technically (not helped in the least by shooting at max digital zoom), but i felt pretty victorious when i punched up the "preview" feature and realized that i had an image at all.

ok, the other day all me 'n UberBear could give you was a grainy image of a nest. THIS time you've got an actual bird to look at. so, what is it??? : )

If ya keep posting these pics, I am going to have to escape the rain forest in a month or so and sneak my way down the coast route until I show up on your door step! : )

And when I show up on your door step, I will make sure it is around 5:00 PM so I don't miss the BBQ!

>>>Lake Berryessa and Hiway 121

One of my favorite rides.

FB: Those are totally awesome pictures. To those of us who do this sort of thing, we admire the one of the bike on the road, shot from above. I know that as simple as that picture looks, they often involve some serious, particualrly in full gear, climbing.

I did my own ride yesterday and, as always does, the weirdest things happened. I'm still not over the euphoria and being reminded what happens to me on a Buell. Took about 100 pics, still sorting them. I'll just say that our NASHVILLE event took a serious leap forward.

All the best to you and Denise for a spectacular new year. I continue to be entertained that we live on seperate coasts and both have spectacualr, albeit far differing, photos ops right out the back door.

All the best,
Court

thanks U4. the last series i posted i was riding solo, but Denise was certainly with me in spirit, especially as i modulated the thermostat on my new Widder gear. i've ridden for four decades now (yikes!), but this is the very first time i've been truly WARM on a truly COLD day, and can't imagine EVER riding unwired again. : )

PdxJim: promises, effin' promises. i'll believe it when i see it. (ps: how do you like your steak? : ) )

FMJim: pix, man, we want PIX!!!!! : )

Court, thanks. funny you should mention that one shot, as i was huffin' and puffin' like an old fat man (which, of course, i am), as i lumbered over boulders and logs looking for just the right angle. Fay Ranch Road is the bomb. it doesn't go far, ultimately stopped in its tracks as it is by the rugged promontories of the Domeland Wilderness, but in its several miles of length you climb rather impressively from the riparian lowlands below thru boulder-strewn chaparral right up into the pine-studded heavens, on a road that demands constant attention, and one that rewards plenty ot torque.

and an appreciative eye.

looking forward to seeing your pix. : )

FB - Wow, where have you been hiding that thar Fay Ranch Road. Beautiful scenery, great pix! Love it!

I can see I'm gonna have to get my raptor book out when I get back to P'ville. You didn't happen to inquire of the wearer whether that is juvenile or adult plumage, didja? Guess not.

BTW, have you noticed a disturbing trend. There seem to be large wooden bears wherever you two stay recently. Just a coincidence? Hmmmm?

Okay, Court sure has me intrigued...

Dino, Fay Ranch Road is just around the corner from us. it's not very long, maybe ten minutes from end to end (more if you have an itchy photo finger), but is an amazing journey nonetheless. next time you're in the neighborhood i'll take you there.

plumage? that anything like pruneage?

as for trends, ANYTHING related to me could be considered disturbing.

ditto Court.

and license plate relocator, altho i yanked it yesterday and reinstalled the original unit, as the new piece is rather poorly designed, plus also puts the rear turn signals in direct conflict with D's new RKA's.
