It's actually supposed to warm up here for a couple days. Hurricane, yes really...torrential rains and 50mph winds, like weather yesterday answered my "God, please wash this salt off the streets" prayer. I am thinking (strange concept, eh?) of sneaking out, as the sunsets, with a tripod, a camera and the City Crosser to do some "framed by the Empire State Building" and Brooklyn Bridge pics. We'll see what the weather does and what the SCU (Spousal Command Unit) says.....  >>>>but i also know it's been a long time. you ARE, in other words, slightly overdue. Solvable. Court | ||

Jim: Thanks for the heads up on how to perform the update. I've come within seconds of popping for a D70 in the last week but the 950 just does everything I need! It's nice to be fully pixelated. This is going to be a project with lots of photo ops. The Stellaprima ported in Montreal, from Korea, on the 19th. I'll take delivery of her cargo at slack water (0400 hours) on 01.05.04. I've been working till late at night on the engineering calcs, crane placement, marine safety regs and how to get the 3 "just a skoosh shy of 400,000# transformers from the water to their new home. Also been quite busy getting their new home built. Concrete being poured Monday. This is a "warm up" for me as I have two shipments, the first scheduled to come under the Brooklyn Bridge by inches at low tide on 07.15.05, that weight 5,000,000 pounds each. This has never been done so it's going to be interesting. Ever built an 8' thick reinforced concrete 300' road that you were going to use for 2 days then demolish? Anyway...I ain't the brightest bulb in the chanedl...chanda.....ch....screwit...light fixture but I love marrying problems and solutions. I was at least smart enough last week, to commit to the Chesapeake (world's largest marine crane) and bright enough to do the calcs to understand that the Columbia (a HUGE marine crane) left too thin a margin of error. Ever rented a crane for $88,0000 per hour? Bad time to hear someone say....we've got a problem...give us a little time to sort it out. Court, while we all collectively ponder the meaning of "doable" i offer up two more chunks of bait, chummed from the front deck several moments ago:   yep, it's brutal out here, but we somehow manage. btw, two clues that it's actually winter here in SoCal: 1) there are a few wispy clouds in the sky; 2) the potted flowers in the foreground are not blooming quite as vigorously as they do in July. do·a·ble adj. Court, You would not be going wrong with the Nikon D70 if you decide to make that jump to a digital SLR. I myself am real close to a new digital SLR (replacing my Olympus E-10), will either be a Canon 20D or the Nikon D70. Will always have my trusty 950 in the camera bag for backup though. Thanks for sharing the job site photo's it looks and sounds like a lot of fun! If I ever make it back to NYC, maybe you can give me a tour? Happy Holidays to ya! Every year around this time I remember why I hate Californians. Yesterday it dumped a foot of heavy damp snow. Then warmed up and rained an inch or two of sleet, water and ice pellets. THEN it cooled off to form a smooth ready-mix icecap with a rockwell hardness of about 42 overtop EVERything. Had to literally "break into" my own car. Keep the warm sunny views coming, Jerry.
