A Door of Perception

Shaun with Blublocker hair.

X marks the spot at Fountain Springs.

Nice place to stop.

Jerry and Al doing their best Hunter Thompson impersonations. Too much Ibocaine in my opinion. Truly fear and loathing at play here.

Dino with a modified Vulcan "Live Well and Prosper" greeting.

Al Lighton aka McGyver.

Victor looking ready to tear up the road!

So this is the White House that Bush and Kerry want to occupy?

Another window of perception. The first Park Superintendent lived in here.

Laurie saying "I ain't going in there"

Hanging out here sure beats working in an office.

Don't ya just hate it when this happens?
did anyone else notice how the driver skipped any number of paved pull-outs BEFORE the park and then pulled over to let us by AT the park, when we all had to stop anyway?

"I was concerned you might have missed that safety speech we had??"
or: “I’m sorry, Tom, but I WON’T slow down just so you can keep up.”

No caption required.
i.e. “Suckless.”

Just 'bearly' awake...waiting for Ferris to get his face on so we can get going.
more likely: “Waiting for Ferris to FEED his face so we can get going.”

Umm...can you tell who just got new tires?
I offered to scrub in the boys’ new meats (and also do something about their shiny new footpegs in the process) but I think they were askeered…

Whoa...so's that one!

(this was copied from the Oktoberfast thread on the QuickBoard so it wouldn't get lost in the archives)

Just an update on the ride........

I was unable to meet up with the group in Lemon Grove like I wanted too (sleeping in is great, sometimes) So I made the ride solo backwards (by their route) knowing somewhere I would cross paths with the group.

Holy cow, some of the most technical riding I have ever experienced through the park on the 198 side, 10-15 mph (yeah right). No more chicken strips on the right side anyway!

Rode all the way through both parks, stopped at the Monticeto Inn, no one there yet. Cool, still out there somewhere. Continue down to and out of the park, on to the turnoff at 245, and WHAMOO, ton of brillant colors and sassy machines parked in formation there at the intersection! Knew I would find them, sooner or later!!

And so started the headlight badgering, bull riding and "we need your tire" harassment I KNEW to expect when this fabled group was tracked down.

We badgered and BS'd for a bit, group massed up (tire thing was no joke, hope all went well with that endeavor) and I had to continue on my way, but not before meeting and shaking hands with some of the best people I have ever met on two wheels. A picture or 2 later (Jerry hope the head is ok!! LOL), and I headed down while they headed up to the lodge. Duty calls!

And as for the sign that says "skwigly line next 31 miles", uh, NO KIDDING!! I have NEVER scrubbed a tire that bad before!! Even the wife said "DAM" when i got back, and that was after 45 miles of highway "smoothing"!!

Thanks again guys for another reason to get out and on the edges, I will ride the Bostrom soon, and Jerry, you may have a weekend riding nag on your hands now!! JK!!

Hope you all had a great rest of the weekend, next time I WILL be a porch rat on Friday!

Bruce

P.S. Boston does RULE!! LOL! --Bruce "RR Eater" Parmenter

and here's a shot of the RR Eater himself (just after i tried to impale myself on the corner of a frikkin' road sign...) : )

great shots, greater story, greatest folks, by the sound of it

thanks for your address to the troops, JH -- I promise I'll save it this time -- it echos what I've sad in the past to groups, but, as per usual, it's so much more lucid than my rambling, I believe I'll just quote you from now on

Bomber, the gang will tell you that i ramble with the best of them, but i appreciate your words. it's REALLY important to get EVERYONE'S attention during the speech. how many times have you seen several riders during a pre-ride speech hanging in the back, cutting jokes, doing last-minute tinkering on their bikes, etc.

get EVERYONE to stop what they're doing. all bikes off. start light, keep everybody in the spirit, thank everyone for coming, talk about all the great stuff the ride is gonna entail, etc., etc., etc.

and then get down to the dirty business: the fact that this stuff can kill you. nobody wants to think about, much less talk about it, but you HAVE to get everyone's attention - it's that important.

i have in the past, if the group seemed to need it, had SEVERAL safety speeches throughout the day, just to keep everyone's helmet pointed the right direction. we didn't need to do this last year or this year.

and, honestly, i was a little afraid of implementing the "No drinking - No drugs" rule. i don't know exactly why i had this fear, but i knew that it was important after what happened at the Torquefest last year, and i was determined to stick to it for Oktoberfast '03 regardless of what people thought.

well, it turned out to be a GREAT thing, so much so that we did it again this year, and not a single person complained. it's very likely that every ride i ever organize in the future will be run this way. it eliminates (especially in terms of beer drinking at lunch stops during a ride) several possible sources of impaired judgement, and precludes - should someone happen to go down during the ride anyway - any possibility of someone pointing fingers after the fact and stating that drinking and/or drugs may have caused the shunt.

i do NOT have this stuff figured out. a lot of what we do boils down to luck, doesn't it? it's risky biz piloting a scoot down a twisty road, even at best, and there are no guarantees.

but the odds can be stacked a little more in our favor with the right choice of words and a little influence.

thanks again, Bomber.

amen, sir, amen

I've also found that talking about the varied experience levels of the riders, and please taken that into account helps, but, after seeing the grizzled vets you were riding with, that wouldn't apply ;-}

I firmly beleive that if you set expectations properly, and model the behavior you desire, you'll be rewarded --

I buried 14 rinding buddies over the years, and, with one exception, I'm the oldest active rider I know -- THAT pi55es me off mightily, and am trying to make sure I got riding bussies galore in what Court refers to as the golden years

As you say, luck is an important part, integral, but you CAN stack the deck in yer favor

you may not be the expert on this speecifying stuff, but I'm stealin from ya anyways
