Alex, what is your choice of tire brand and size (standard 170?). I would think your rear may be toast somewhere near KC and perhaps I can work the dealers here for a donation.

Tripper...

Remember if there is any reason for a bike maintenance/repair stop in KC, my shop is being offered for use. I am just a few blocks off of I70, easy to find. Sam, Paul, Neill, Jeff & Derek have seen it lately... it has most of what one would need... short of a welder. There is even a cot if it became an over nighter.

Also... tag base with the MidAmerica PowerSport Plus Guy, and the tire for the July raffle might be diverted for this cause, I don't think he would object and the club could happily do without that raffle.

Just a thought!

Bartimus, Unibear, and anybody else doing all or part of the Lake Isabella to Zion National Park leg:

i have three rooms at the Best Western/Zion in Springdale, Utah reserved for Friday night 7/23. each room has two queen beds, and anyone doing all or part of leg #1 is welcome to grab a bed (or roll-away, if we have that many people).

these rooms became available ONLY via the General Manager of Zion H-D/Buell, Alan Blackburn, calling in a favor, as that day is a Utah state holiday (who knew???) and lodging (particularly this caliber of lodging) is mighty scarce throughout the state that weekend as a result.

camping didn't seem to me to be a viable option for that night, as we will have just spent the day crossing the desert. trust me: i've just been there, i've just done that, and at the end of day one everyone is gonna be wiped from the heat.

i have proposed to Zion H-D/Buell and Las Vegas H-D/Buell (who are business partners) that they pick up the cost of the rooms, as their contribution to Ride Across North America, and i should know their decision in a few days. in return, i promised a PR stop with Alex at each store on the way thru, and plenty of quality acknowledgement here on BADWEB.

if they DO agree to my proposal, i would hope that anyone sleeping in a soft bed in an air-conditioned room that night will donate whatever their accommodations are worth to them to Alex and the RANE fund.

it they DON'T accept my proposal, I will cover the cost of the rooms, and would still ask that appropriate contributions are made to Alex.

Das, very cool of you to offer up your shop! : )

Tripper,
I usually run D207s, I've gotten decent mileage out of them, and that's what I have sitting in the garage to throw on for th trip. The rear is a 170. Let me know who to talk to at the dealership, and I'll give them a call.

Ferris,
Awesome work with the Zion dealership. Let me know the outcome of that, I have some people on this end that would be willing to throw in for that as well...

This week I'll be finalizing everything. Keep an eye out for lots of posts.
Alex

Mike,
Hopefully the exhaust note of the Buell doesn't scare him along the way!

All,
I will be gone for a few days, headed out to Las Vegas with a few friends to celebrate their graduation and the successful end to another term at school. While I'm there, I'll be stopping by Las Vegas Buell to talk up the trip, and so they can meet me before Ferris and I knock on their door in a few short weeks.
I have plenty of time on the plane to go over my last minute itinerarys, and should have all of that ready for you when I return on Wednesday.

It looks like t-shirts are going to be in the making, I'll have details about that as well.

It also turns out that the HD Dealership Meetings will be in San Diego the same weekend I'll be there... Hope to run into a few of the key players while I'm there. What great timing!

Where to start...

Sin City was fun... Almost too much fun. I don't think I could handle another day there with the company I was with... We tend to get a bit crazy at times. Regardless, a good trip. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to get to Las Vegas HD, the taxi ride was ridiculous ($$$), and I understand that the shuttle service was extremely busy. I will be there in a few short weeks though.

Plane tickets to San Diego, booked.
Bike shipment, booked (www.forwardair.com is the way to go to ship a bike if a major airport is nearby).

Due to the awesome southern PA weather, I haven't had a chance to check out the T-shirt options (I'm back to my farming days of old to help finance the trip, as that's the easiest job to take 3 weeks off, right after hay and straw season is done), but my Dad will be checking out the options there in the next few days.

I've got a new set of shoes for the stallion on the way, and the little things I need to do to get her ready are coming along as well (Still need to decide if I want to toss on a new belt, the old one looks pretty good).

I have quite a few checks from the auctions to deposit tomorrow, and then I'll have an updated donation amount for the American Cancer Society.

Gettysburg Bike Week starts on the 8th, I'll be there most of the week, somewhere, talking up the ride and hopefully getting a few more donations, and hopefully con COURT into coming down as well to talk of the fabulous history of Buell (Court, you listening???)

If any of you are along the way of the path I have posted somewhere in this thread, please shoot me an email or give me a call. I'd love to touch base with as many Badwebbers along the way as possible, and I have a tank, thanks to Ferris and Jim Bantz, for you to sign as a little momento of the journey I'm about to embark on.

Thanks to everyone who has chipped in with words of encouragement, donations, and general support of this whole thing. HUGE thanks to Ferris for spearheading a lot of this work when I was tied up with school and all of the other goings on. Lastly, thanks to the ACS for letting me jump in and give my, and the Buell community's, contribution to this great and noble cause.

I will have some 'stuff' to post on the storm fronts about destination times etc. when I get a chance. Keep your eyes peeled.

T-minus 15 days to jump off... This is going to be exciting...

a reminder for FMJ, Unibear, Dino, Bartimus, or anyone else riding leg #1 on Fri 7/23 with Alex to Zion Nat'l Park:

we've got three rooms with two queen beds each already reserved at the Zion Best Western in Springdale, UT (just outside the park) for that night. i haven't heard back from LV H-D/Buell, so it looks like the rooms are on me.

my hope is that anyone who snags a bed that night will donate whatever amount of $ the accommodation was worth to them to the RANE fund.

ALSO: on the return trip Denise and i are spending Sat night 7/24 in Death Valley, and then on Sunday riding back to Lake Isabella the scenic route via Mt. Whitney and Sherman Pass.

we've got a cabin reserved at Furnace Creek, and as of today they still have plenty left, but they'll go fast. the cabins are considerably cheaper, and MUCH cozier IMO, than their regular rooms.

each cabin has two queen beds, A/C, color TV, covered porch, etc. i spent the night in one on the way back from the RANE recon ride and really enjoyed the digs (plus, you're within crawling distance of the Saloon...)

anyway, here's the contact info if you're interested in staying on the road with us that night:

Furnace Creek Inn and Ranch Resort
toll-free 888/297-2757 (then press 3 to bypass the recording)
local 760/786-2345
website

the cabins go for $85.00 a night ($76.50 if you show a AAA card), which is pretty reasonable considering the location, especially if you split the cost with someone.

anyone (FMJ?) who wants to spend Sunday night 7/25 here at the ThunderDome on the way back to your particular version of reality is welcome.

Ferris

As Ferris is good at saying... Wait for Alex to come up for air...

The past two weeks have been incredibly hectic, working 12 hours a day to get cash for the trip, doing late night shakedown rides and figuring out just what I need to take and pouring over maps. I need to give credit to a few great badwebbers for designing the RANE logo

As well as sending a few other decals which now reside on the Cyclone and a few other places.

JB2 and Ferris worked together to get a tank painted up for the trip, which will include the RANE decals that chainsaw made, as well as the signatures of those I encounter along the way. That should arrive shortly.
This week is Gettysburg Bike Week, and today was my first time to ride for fun in a bit. Tomorrow and Saturday will be spent plugging the trip there, and seeing what last minute donations I can pull in from the crowd there.

It's also going to be a busy weekend, the Buell departs Baltimore Washington International Airport early Monday morning for it's trip to San Diego to begin the Ride Across North America, and I will be leaving early Friday morning to begin my adventures in California.

The small things left to do are confirming meeting locations etc. with everyone, which has been made a bit more difficult due to a broken cell phone (the new one will be here tomorrow). So, if you are like IAMike, you will be getting a call from me over the weekend with the info you need.

I will also be placing all of the itinerary info in the respective Storm Fronts sections before work tomorrow morning. One week from now I'll be on the West Coast about to embark on a truly exciting journey! Jerry, FMJ, Bart etc., can't wait to meet up with you for the first leg!
Anyone with questions etc, ping me at awprior@yahoo.com
Alex

Got the new tires. Only thing is due to dealer screw-up I'm running Dunlops again instead of the expected Metzlers. They made up for it tho so I'm sort-of happy. Thing is its fairly obvious that I can burn up a set of Dunlops just trying to keep up with Jerry for just one weekend!

THE ADVENTURE BEGINS...

This past week began lots of work for the trip. Saturday I put on a new set of D220s, by hand, since the UPS guy managed to stuff the tires in the corner of the garage and I didn't see them until 3 days later (no time to set up an appointment after that). We also did quite a bit of riding throughout the past few days just to check everything out. Brian (stingaroo), Mike (amazing_nobody) and one of Mike's friends were around for the Gettysburg Bike Week, and we logged close to 800 miles during that.

Yesterday Brian and I built the crate that the Buell will be going to California in:

A few Yuenglings during work, and the salute...

Early this morning, getting ready to leave for the airport.

Little did I know that the ride down would involve more rain that I've ever ridden in (think 6" streams running across the road), as well as hellish traffic on I-695. It wasn't too bad though, my baby is on the way to the left coast for one heck of an adventure! I leave Friday morning, and I'll keep everything updated as much as I can.

Nice suit and I really like the color! I know your busy but I forgot to ask about the T-shirts. I don't want to be the only one without one on the first leg if they are being made. XXL if possible but if not I understand.

Just checked the temps around the ride route.
LA-74, Mojave-99, DV-99, and the winner?
Thunderdome at 100! Ouch-its usually somewhat cooler up there. And this is at 7PM! No rain out here just great roads.

Glenn,
It's going to be a warm ride... The 'Stich is great, I've got the RANE patch on the front, and a huge Buell one on the back. The suit and the Combat Touring Boots are the best gear I've bought yet.

As far as the T's, I just got the files with the designs in a big enough file to get them made, it's going to be a mad rush to get them in time, but I hope to have them made to take along on the trip. I'll keep you posted.

ps to Unibear: we got in to Lake Isabella about 7 p.m. tonight, and the ambient air temp gauge on the VFR read...

...exactly...

...99 degrees. : )

pss: which sure beats the 107 we saw at McKittrick!

Alex:

You'll do fine with the Black 'Stich. Talk to Ferris and Denise (she has a black on) and get the tips on loading the pockets with crushed ice and using a Camelback.

You can also learn the trick I used to use of wearing a long sleeve t-shirt under it (Buell t-shirt work very well) opening the vents and making your own evaporative cooling system.

When I did my 31 day Lap of America, I spent 30 days in 100+ weather. I spent 10 days doing media riding for Buell at St. George, UT in 120F...heed the warnings and drink LOTS of water...two bottles fit in the tall pocket of the Stich. Practice CLOSING your zippers after fueling.

Ride safe, lean much and smile more,
Court
