i took a wrong turn in Utah, and ended up in Toquerville,
a quaint, quiet Mormon pioneer town, population about 100.
this is downtown:
1

parked out in front of downtown was this old broken-down farm implement.
not so fast, Ferris-breath, it ain't broke, it was made that way.
it's a horse drawn leaning grader, old as the hills, prolly been sitting there forever...

...and EVERY control on it still worked,
all the handles, cranks, and u-joints.
i spent a good 20 minutes looking at this contraption,
marveling in its simplicity, admiring its sophistication.

cool thing about scooters,
you can park 'em ANYWHERE...

...even on the sidewalk on the Las Vegas strip.

this would be valet parking at the Venetian...

...and i was a little out of my element.
cool atmosphere, but the people coming and going
were almost too sexy for their clothes.

to fully appreciate the "Lake Tecopa Yacht Club" sign
you need to know that the nearest body of water larger
than a bathtub is Lake Mead, some 200 miles away.

Ferris,
Zion. Wow. Can't wait to see it myself, Vegas as well, on the Buell. I can't imagine the pictures I'll have after the journey is done. I didn't know your travels this week took you you to Kansas though. Zion, WOW again.

As far as the trike on a trailer... Matt called me today, he now has a pocket bike, just for the hell of it. And he wants to get the RANE decals on it, if you might happen to know where they may have come from, I think he'd like a mini set of them.

Jerry, though we haven't yet met in person, I consider you a dear friend, as is everyone involved with this journey. Every day I get more and more excited about this trip...

Alex. the Kansas detour was why this ride took two extra days! (just kidding, love the shot of the kid cruising thru town on the Farmall.)

you DO have a digital camera, right?

i'll see what i can do about another set of RANE graphics - i think it is doable. cool on Matt for getting in the wind. : )

thanks for the kind words, Alex. this has been a lot of fun, and i'm excited for you. i'll be hanging some more pix later today.

ride to lean,

well, being as how i'm big on ride names, i think this particular adventure should be called "Escape from New York", and with the power of BADWEB at our fingertips the magnitude of this undertaking could become legendary at breathtaking speed.

you say you're always game? pick the dates, start a thread, and let's see where this goes!

btw, if Bomber and Road Thing are any indication, that stack of B2win's above looks a lot to me like a $500 bill. you should hang that pic on the GDB and see if there are five lucky people out there willing to pony up $100 each to Alex's "Ride Across North America" fund in return for their very own copy of the Volume 1 Issue 1 Battle 2win (with, say, personalized inscriptions in the mag from you and that EB feller?)

Hehehehe....been there, done that, did the daily 10:00AM "live from aboard a Buell" talk show and LOVED IT!

If you have never "wandered" on a Buell . . I highly reccommend it.

The fun part is that in the years to come, as folks take Buell to Mt. St. Helens, The Blue Ridge Parkway, The Arbuckle Mountains, and Shasta Lake, the Madonna Inn, Death Valley and Lake Shasta...I'll always be able to say I was there first.

: )

By the way....don't send the RT/Bomber B2W yet. I'll send you an e-mail.

You're the best...setting aside personal comfort and compansionship to spend a couple arduous days blazing the trail for young Alex...Ferris you dawg!

Hey...I'm a dawg too....here's a pic from 10 days I spent hiding just East of the Thunderdome some years ago. It wasn't long after that something like this appears on the cover of CYCLE WORLD and upset the apple cart...

Thought you dudes/ettes might enjoy this from an OLD testing log.

Court, love the shot of the Corvette Sunfire Yellow S1
overlooking the Mojave.
yep, there's plenty of places to hide out there.
one of these days you MUST get that Kansas
of yours back out here so we can
reaquaint you with the area.

remind me to remind you... ; )

UniBear, thanks! i'll have lodging details to share
soon. our first night (which will be first class),
in Zion, is already inked.

this is the southern approach to Death Valley,
looking north towards Badwater, on my return
trip BACK thru DV, double-checking my notes.
the weather? she be looking a might ominous
at this point.
1
it doesn't rain much in Death Valley, but when it does
it POURS. as i hiked up the rocks to get this pic (in full
gear and triple-digit heat), i could hear the thunder echoing
off the mountains.

i got incredibly lucky...
1
...and in due time managed to put most of the weather behind me.

yikes, i better slow down and look AGAIN.
speedo 37, tach 26, and HUH??!!??

Badwater, the lowest point in America, sits smack dab
at the bottom of a mile-high mountain range.
it is quite a contrast.
1
see the sign on the cliff face that says "SEA LEVEL"? No?

here, look closer.
1
this was with my camera at full mechanical and digital zoom,
and this is how far "under the ocean" you are at Badwater.

and damn is it hot.

westbound from Death Valley, barely an hour's flight,
and one ascends from Badwater, at -282 feet,
to Mt. Whitney, at +14,496 feet.
1
this is one major F-ticket ride.

1
the pavement ends here (unfortunately), and it's
L. L. Bean Country from here on up.
the air is so crisp it hurts.

this map was hanging on the wall in the store...
1
...and i couldn't help thinking of Alex.
