Really love the pic of the VFR in front of Whitney.

Such beautiful country, brings back the memories of flying around the back country by helicopter when I worked at Sequoia National Park, the home of Whitney.

When you too the pic, was it a high res shot Jerry?

thanks Blake, one more batch of pix from the trip to post tonight. was hoping to be able to take Alex via Mt. Whitney on our way out to DV, but to do so would make his first day on the road about 625 miles, in the heat, with two PR stops tossed in for good measure. whew. we'll see...

Jim, i'll send the pic to ya tonight - today i gotta work my arse off, to make up for all the screwing around, um, er, i mean reconnaissance i did this past week. ; )

Alex, see you soon. : )

ummm Cave, very cool pics but maybe a new thread - the weather channel??? Something about those pics could make me 'n Toto look for a route to circumvent Kansas.... Surely someone has pics of their Buell on the horizon, in the sunset...

oh shoot, had to crop out the sunset due to Badweb picture size limitations, but TRUST ME, it was there.

That is a rather nice mailbox, don't you agree?

I rode the entire paved length of Death Valley in April 02. It was only around 85 degrees, and I did get rained on.

Were you able to ride through the tunnel at Zion? I was there in the off season and they let me do it. Loud pipes sound wonderful echoing in it!

Chainsaw, marvelous!!! there's a certain synchronicity to all this, don't you think? (put another way: great minds think alike. : ) )

yeah, rode thru the tunnel both directions, even stopped and looked out one of the "portholes"!

Zion is fantastic, coulda posted a lot more pix from there, but don't want to spoil it for Alex. : )

the Alabama Hills above Lone Pine, so i've read, have the distinction of having had more movies filmed there over the years than any other place in the world save for Hollywood.

including, it seems, the movie "Gunga Din".

1
this is a cool place, that not many riders passing thru the area would even realize was there. next time you watch the movie "Tremors" with Kevin Bacon (the best awful movie ever made), see if these rocks look familiar.

Ferris,
Absolutely great pictures. I'll look through them again when I actually have some sleep. Sorry I've been away for a bit, I finally made it back to PA a few hours ago. Now begins the process of finalizing everything now that school is over... Lots of work to do this week...

Court,
Ever think of posting a picture of every Buell item you own? You're killing us, man. Still up for meeting in Northern PA sometime before the trip kicks off?

"The Buell Basement"

Words fail me. Imagine a small room packed to the ceiling with Buell paraphenalia, bicycles, photo gear, hand tools, books, plumbing supplies and God-only-knows what-all.

Now imagine detonating about thirty feet of primacord in there and following that up with a small tornado and you've got a pretty good picture of Court's "Buell Basement!"

r-t

In other words, it looks a lot like my garage, except there's more Buell stuff and less lead shot and Bondo dust in Court's basement!

That was definitely a joke. I've seen enough of your posts to know it'd be impossible. It would make for a heck of a museum or book though.

Had a bit of a disk crash last week, but luckily was able to recover some things.

Example: a file dated 8/21/02
 filename: courts_room
from a file dated 1/24/04
 filename: courts_buell_basement
now, um, correct me if I'm wrong, but we're looking in the same general direction in both pics of the Buell Basement, yes?

OK Alex, I tried to show you some of the good scenes from Kansas. But to tell the truth, here is what you'll be looking at from Eastern CO until you pass KC.

Tripper,
I've heard from a lot of folks that's what to expect. It's ok though, it'll be something to see none the less.

I'll probably be flying over that area (somewhat) in the next few days on the way to Vegas, but we'll be up a lot higher than that!

The following text is an excerpt of Flyover Country by crop artist Stan Herd, featured in Oz Volume 19.

A Kansas farm child discovers the world one small intimate detail at a time. When encountered for the first time, a sparrow is as fascinating as the universe. Without majestic mountains or postcard sea coasts for comparison we are forced to focus on subtle detail. Early memories of summers spent roaming the cottonwood strewn valley we call "the pasture" just up over the rise west of our farmhouse are still vivid. Those adventures reveal an abundance of discoveries unending in their uniqueness.

No way, Baliwood outproduces Hollywood hands down, that means Lone Pine is in 3rd.
