I have been practicing every night.
I put all 9 arrows in a 3"x3" square from 20 yards last night... WOOOO HOOOO!!

I can't wait!!!

After all this, I probably wont even see a deer....

OK.... so far... nothing... but its all good.

I spent yesterday morning watching two raccoons eat my corn. One of them was solid black. He looks like a mini black bear. Once it started to get a little more light out they hit the road and the squirrels came out to play. I have never seen some many squacks in one spot. I watched 3 chase each other up and down a tree like it was a barber pole.... it was pretty funny. Then it started to rain again and one of them stopped on a branch and put his tail over his back like a umbrella. Another thing that put a smile on my face was the chipmunks. They would pack their mouths FULL of corn and run across a small open area at full speed. With their jaws stuffed to the max, it made for a very funny site....

I will be heading out late this afternoon to try again. My hunting partner saw a doe with 2 fawns so he gave her a pass.... The rut is only about a month away... woo hoooo!

Well.... stopped at Walmart and bought some camo face paint.... it must have done the trick!

3 deers enter.... 2 deers leave....

A doe came walking within range but I kept hearing something off to my right... but I don't dare move... she put her head down to eat.... and I turned my head... it was a squack!!.. So I turn my head back to look at the deer and I hear a LOUD snort! But the deer isn't looking at me... It was another doe at my 3 o'clock! I was busted! She and the first doe hit the bricks quick! So I think I'm done for the day.... but decide to hang out for another 30 min. or so... I'm glad I did... A button buck came along... right under may stand. I let him get out to about 20 yard and then he turned broadside to me and I let a arrow fly.... right over his back!! The arrow hit the weeds and made a bunch of noise and he jumped... but he didn't run... Are you kidding me?? He walked out of range but not out of site... he circled around and came right back in front of me... and as if to say "I'll give ya one more shot" he turn broadside again... I took my time... aimed a little lower... and thwack!! I got him!! He dropped right there.... Damn.. the shot was high... I took aim for another shot and that was that... deer is in the fridge!

Now that I have used my antlerless tag... it time to start hunting/waiting for the big rack!

Way to go! Whoo Hooo! Your first bow kill.
You'll never forget the first one.
Good job.

I went out yesterday morning for a couple hours in a thunderstorm. Not fun.
Didn't see a single deer, I guess they are smarter than me.
Bows to work on this morning to get people ready for tomorrow so I am working, instead of hunting.

The wife had her first taste of deer meat this morning and she liked it!
So I will be buying another antlerless permit.
I got the back half processed last night and I'm getting ready to go do the rest.
One of my friends brought over his meat grinder for me to use.... its all GOOD!

Its all most time to start thinking about ordering another batch of arrows from you...
I'm down to 8....

Got my first doe of the year yesterday! Whoo Hoo fresh backstrap.

The best thing about yesterday was I got to take a customer/friend on her first ever bow hunt. She just started shooting archery about a year ago. Last Thursday night she stopped in the shop to get her tags and shoot some broadheads. Of course, a few of us were all talking hunting and Eric asked her where she was planning on hunting this weekend. She didn't really have "a plan" so we invited her to just go with us since we have everything in place. She happily agreed. Eric came down with a bad cold on Sat from 3 days of hunting in the rain so it was down to just Kari and me. I picked her up at 4:10 AM and she was ready! Pretty impressive!
On the drive to the hunting ground she said her Dad had told her there was no way she would get a deer, with a bow, her first year. I told her that good ole Dad had no idea of who she was hunting with and that for sure she would get a chance at a deer. The rest would be up to her.

So, we get to the place, in the pitch dark, and we get ready. She did not have a safety harness so I had brought a spare for her and got her all set to go. Now, I haven't been in this woods since May and have only been there 3 times in total. I decide to put her in a ladder stand on the edge of the timber. I then went to another stand about 100 yards away.
Legal shooting time was about 6:30am and at 7:13 am I get a phone call from kari. "I shot a doe and she is dead in the bean field about 50 yards in front of me!"
She was a little excited to say the least!
I went over to get her a couple hours later and sure enough, there was the doe, dead as a doornail about 40 yards out. She made a perfect "Double Lung" shot.
First bow hunt, first shot and her first deer.
She even bought me lunch for gutting and dragging her deer out.
Everything went great. She was ready on time, did everything right, listened and followed directions, made the shot. I am pretty impressed.

PS, she called her Dad right after she called me and told him he had been wrong!

Great story, Dave!

I'm watching my pet herd this morning--7 does and 4 bucks by my pond. One of the bucks is a pretty nice (for Austin Cty, TX) 8 point. The rut is just starting down here.

This herd is safe from me--I only shoot birds.

I'm just sick.... I just shot the 8 point... and I can't find him.
It started raining... no blood trail that I can find....
I found the nock off the arrow next to the tree and thats it.
I think it came off when he ran past the tree and it hit the tree as he ran by...
I gotta work tomorrow so I can't start looking for him again until the afternoon...
Damn this sucks!

If the property change I'm looking into happens, I will be joining the feathered hunter program. Never have bow hunted.

The last deer I shot(in NW Pa)turned just as I squeezed the trigger, shot went just behind the ribs just below the spine. It turned ran twenty feet head on to a friend of mine who shot it more in self defense, he never saw it until it was heading towards him. That deer had had a bad day. one leg was freshly missing at the knee.

Keep looking, you might still find him!

I shot one of the new ones... it hit kinda left of the bullseye but still in the black.
Put in a old arrow... it hit right in the end of the new arrow!! DAMN!
Fyi, I'm not pulling them apart this time.

Update
I am up to 5 doe now in the freezer
4 with my bow, 1 with my muzzleloader
The rut is heating up now and the next 2 weeks will be the best time to shoot a nice buck.
Had a customer show me the HUGE buck he shot last Friday night. Gross green score of 225"! 23 points.

The deer are gone.... they have moved off my feeder and I see NO sign of them anywhere.
I would have thought with the rut kicking off they would be every where.
When the season started about 6 weeks ago, I would see a doe or 2 every day.
Now, nothing..... I'm about to start shooting squacks.
