Please don't flame me for posting a non Buell related story, but this was an active duty adventure too funny not to share.

As an original crewmember of the USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) we had a liberty call on the Island of Bermuda (Of Bermuda triangle fame). Now, if you have never been there, it is a strange place for an American... narrow twisty roads, driving on the left hand side... all that. Anyway, there were not any car rental places to speak of, but you could rent a scooter for like $50 for a week, insurance included. (Doom on you rental place)

My buddy and I went out on said scooters exploring the island, looking for exotic scenery (the bikini type) and lo and behold the road went from asphalt to gravel... then gravel to dirt, then to grass. Strange this place was, so being an American sailor on shore leave I did what any self respecting member of the world's finest navy would do. Me and my buddy started doing "burnouts" on the grass.

After a few moments, we noticed how clean and pristene the landscape was... and there was a tiny pennant flying from a skinny pole... holy dog crap! We had just turfed a golf course! (My work center supervisor had just mentioned that morning that he had saved up over $260 to play a round of 9 holes there)

That was when we saw about 60 yards away, a golf cart ramping over a hill with a very angry grounds keeper shouting at us and waving his fist in the air. Unfortunately for him, scooters are faster than golf carts... He never saw us again.

Part II

The last night in port, my buddy, let's call him "Gunner", and I went from North Ireland Island to the capital Hamilton. About a 45 minute ride by scooter. Anyway, we did what any good sailor would do and found a nice watering hole with lots of scenery. After a couple of hours, we headed back to the ship, not knowing what the road ahead had in store. A pop up tropical storm. The kind of downpour that lasts for hours, wind that had the rain falling horizontally, and the cheap rental helmets had no face shield.
It was night, riding on the left hand side, narrow twisty roads, 0 visibility, and Gunner had just gotten done playing his favorite game... Gunner Get The Beer. Almost 2 hours later, my beloved leather jacket was soaked through, we returned to the pier, parked those dang scooters and did what any good sailor would do when their nerves are shot, cold and wet. Went to the closest bar....
