Great day for a ride so I head west up the river. Coming back through the canyon I alternate laying back while stuck behind traffic and hammering down when a good safe chance to pass comes along. Where possible I like to clear a group of cars before getting to a nice set of curves. After several passes the adrenaline was pumping and obviously clouded my judgement. There were at least two cagers who probably crapped in their pants and then cursed me, and I can't blame them.

Thanks to Google Earth I have an overview image and three helmet cam views ala "Streetview". The overview shows my path as I pullout to pass and then, eventually, swerve back into my lane. My decision to pass was based on my perception of clear road for a good half mile as I could see way off the oncoming traffic through a gap in the rocks. The two cars I was passing were not going very fast so I thought I had plenty of room. I misjudged my closing speed with the oncoming traffic really bad. I also believe the front car that I was passing was speeding up much more than I anticipated. I also broke my own rule about not passing when I have the solid line. I'll let the following pictures tell the rest.

overview

pullout

oops

swerve

Ahh! The age old question (that screams silently in the void between ones ears)
"WHY DID I DO THAT?"
Sure glad you squoze through that so you could tell us about it!
I understand though (really!) Country like that could sure make a feller a bit over ambitious.
Rotzaruck!

We've all done it. Not all of us were willing to share having done it. The fact that you were willing to share, means it made you think. Thinking about it and learning from it will make you a better rider.
